Is this what is now promised for the north?? At last the announcement. Everyone knew it. Everyone also knew that cancelling HS2 had to have the critical caveats of it at least going all the way to central London, and it being replaced by local and regional transport schemes. Integrated transport proposals were already at the heart of HS2. So no new ideas there! Localised improvements for Manchester and Birmingham were already part of the devolution deal announced this year. So not much new there either. A new Leeds - Manchester connection will not be High Speed. So another disappointing outcome. But I think the real question is how can people trust the government that it will deliver on any project. Blaming new facts as the reason for changing your mind is not good enough. We need to think carefully how the country can commit and remain committed to large scale building projects.

The #Swiss government has launched a consultation with the cantons on the proposed #underground freight tunnel network, Cargo sous terrain (CST). The system will stretch from Geneva to St Gallen, providing a #tunnel network for automated, driverless electric #freight vehicles. The first 70km section, connecting the Härkingen-Niederbipp hub with #Zurich Airport, is scheduled to open in 2031 and CST plans to create a 500km nationwide network by 2045. CST said the consultation, which is part of the government’s #transport sector plan, was “the first stage of a comprehensive approval process that will ultimately enable the construction of the first section of the CST network from Härkingen to Zurich Airport”. The cantons’ feedback will be used to refine the project. The sectoral plan shows the planning corridor for the route of the tunnel, #construction-related planning zones and a detailed #environmental impact report. “The foundations of CST include a committed sustainability strategy for the benefit of the #environment and #climate,” said CST, adding that the project would create a new supply and waste disposal #infrastructure for the benefit of the whole of #Switzerland. The privately financed freight and goods transport system aims to relieve pressure on roads and rail. In 2022, Switzerland’s Federal Council created the legal basis for the project, and last year #geotechnical investigations commenced. CST’s investors include AFRY, Pini Group, Implenia and Siemens.

#publictransport and #mobility is an essential element of the #sustainability #transition. I recently visited #Chengdu in #China and was surprised to see the rate of development of public #transportation #infrastructure. The more people using public transport, the lower the #carbonfootprint of travel becomes, and city roads become less congested. One significant factor is that the use of public transport is somewhat cheaper and more efficient and convenient than private #transport in #cities in China. France’s latest 203-mile (327km) stretch of high-speed track to be constructed from Bordeaux across the country’s south – just under double the length of London-Birmingham – is expected to come in at €14bn (£12.1bn). A UK government-commissioned study from 2018 found high-speed rail internationally was generally achieved for about £32m a kilometre, on a range of £11m-£79m a kilometre. Phase one of HS2 looks like coming in at about £250m/km.
