Great article by Forbes on why the educational system in the United States does not always offer a balanced history of Africa which is important to our understanding of history and culture in New World communities. Encouraging to see this featured and also encouraged with the recent success of ForbesBLK From the article: 💡 “Africa is the birthplace of humanity from which hundreds of civilizations emerged. It is a continent of more than 50 countries, and home to thousands of languages and cultures. Africans lived in complex societies, from small villages to large bustling cities, that contained universities, mosques, and libraries. Some of the world’s most advanced agricultural, scientific, engineering, mining, metallurgy, and medical techniques were developed in Africa long before they appeared elsewhere. The great civilizations that flourished in Africa included Egypt, Kush, Axum, Mali and Great Zimbabwe. From 1100 AD, Timbuktu, situated in present-day Mali, thrived as one of the world’s most important centers of culture, learning and architecture. African civilizations featured vibrant trading economies as well.”

In August 2020, during the second wave of the #covid_19 pandemic lockdown, I participated (as a panellist) in a #virtual workshop organised by the Association of African Universities (AAU]. The workshop was attended by over 500 scholars and faculty from across the continent and beyond. The panel of discussants attempted to help participants better understand THE AFRICAN STUDENT'S RESEARCH EXPERIENCE: Making a case for quality supervision. In my submission, I did highlight the basic ordeals the average African research student, especially at graduate education level faces, vis-a-vis their encounters with thesis/dissertation supervisors. Such ordeals to mention but a few include unwarranted hostilities, alienation -not making out time to engage with supervisees and generally lording over their supposed mentees. I called on faculty members to be open at all times to communicating with their wards whilst they must endeavour to give mentorship and not lord themselves over the young academics, especially at graduate education level where relationship and interactions are essential for excellence. In sum, I emphasised that it's become imperative that African higher and tertiary institutions possibly coordinated by the Association of African Universities collaborate towards ensuring total adherence to highest standard of professional integrity and toward having virile or strong higher education across board. In so doing, African higher and tertiary institutions would conspicuously be addressing #SDGs 4,16, and 17. That's towards achieving quality education, justice & strong institutions while fostering partnership. This is so true Prof. Tawana Kupe. We need relevant education systems that can transform our continent. I more than 1000% concur with this view but for me, it should not apply to PhDs only. There is a great need to review curricula from Primary School, Junior & Senior High Schools, all different types of colleges, undergraduate & postgraduate programmes. The whole education system in Africa needs to be revamped. My major challenge is that those who should do it are pushing the responsibility to national governments. Who designs curricula at college & university levels? Is it not lecturers in departments? So where does the government come in? Let us all stand up & be responsible for what is needed & what works for our continent. Another major culprit are the lecturers/supervisors who tell students that they can pick on oversubscribed research areas so that they just get their PhD qualification. This is very bad because we need new knowledge, models, theories, etc to improve what we have and immensely contribute towards our national & continental political, socio-economic development.

These are very interesting findings, well done Savo Heleta et al., for this such an interesting findings. My commentary are just prematurely for now, as I have not read the entire paper, but it would be interesting to know which research themes our local university and their partner institutions in various continents collaborate on and whether this trends is likely to change on the next 10 years, especially in light of multiple global changes such as among others climate change, food security and stability and peace. Well done, again, I will have a read of this research paper.

This is epic. I did research on the engineering sector in my MBA and the literature on my subject of study was very limited. My supervisor could also not get her head around the subject matter and gave me an unbelievable mark. The prize winning research was an economics research. This forces business school research to focus on specific already well-researched fields. We need to bridge the walls between faculties- in my current job I have to explain why finance people need to understand “where the money they manage is made”, understand the whole value chain for you to manage your scope. Explain why engineering people have to factor in economics, finance and politics including other things in their decision making and day to day activities. Disciplines work on the same thing but in silos. Prof needs to speak up more and we need to make him trend.
