🔬 Dr. Maria Amaya, an assistant professor in the CU Division of Hematology, is spearheading groundbreaking research aimed at advancing treatment methods for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). AML is known for its aggressive nature, affecting primarily older adults with a challenging median age at diagnosis of 69 years. Despite intensive therapies, the relative five-year survival rate stands at only 31.9%, underscoring the urgent need for more effective treatments. "Our goal is to disrupt the leukemia stem cells that drive AML, potentially leading to more durable remissions," explains Dr. Amaya. Her research has identified STAT3's involvement in mitochondrial function and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), crucial processes for cancer cell survival. By inhibiting STAT3 with a small molecule called "stattic," Dr. Amaya and her team have observed mitochondrial dysfunction and subsequent cell death in leukemia stem cells. A large number of cases of cancer are identified to be leukemia. Leukemia is a sort of cancer of the blood and marrow. The disease is characterized through the overproducing of immature blood cells (stem cells) that are not able to fully develop and to carry out the activities of normal blood cells. According to their functions and structure, there are three different types of cells within the normal blood: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Through the process of hematopoiesis, these three types of blood cells are developed from a distinctive type of blood cell called stem cell. Stem cells divide and go through several stages of development to finally form a mature blood cell of a particular type, with a certain, distinctive function in the body.
