2/2 Today I am proud to serve as the elected representative of a riding where countless students, staff, faculty and alumni of the three English universities live. NDG also includes Concordia’s Loyola campus – a haven of arts and science, communications and commerce, sports and recreation. Our diversity is our strength, yet once again we see diversity itself coming under attack by the CAQ government.
For five years the CAQ has actively sought to divide Quebecers, to frame minorities as the enemy and the protection of French as a zero-sum game. The truth is quite the opposite: according to a recent Angus Reid poll, 93% of anglophones want to protect and promote French. In this mission we are allies and a key part of the solution – let the protection of French be a grand societal undertaking in which all of us take part. Let Quebec be a place where everyone feels a strong sense of belonging regardless of where they come from or the language(s) they speak at home.
McGill, Concordia and Bishop’s universities are home-grown and world-class institutions, yet here they are being treated as second-class by their own government. Once again the CAQ seeks to sow division, largely to distract from its pitiful record on health and housing, climate and education. Quebecers deserves better.
These new measures are blatantly discriminatory, and I am personally committed to being a strong voice against them.
