In 2022, only 7% of new academics in AI came from Industry. I found this fact a little distressing. How can we get our top AI talent back into our colleges and universities? This reflects a trend of much lower transition of academic talent from industry to academia. "In 2019, 13% of new AI faculty in the United States and Canada were from industry. By 2021, this figure had declined to 11%, and in 2022, it further dropped to 7%. This trend indicates a progressively lower migration of high-level AI talent from industry into academia." With thanks to the Data Science Institute at Imperial College London and The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) for hosting a really excellent two-day Symposium on Generative AI & The Knowledge Economy. The session on the Role of AI in Education was expertly moderated by Jon Cardoso-Silva and shared progressive and insightful perspectives on how generative AI is already significantly changing practices. Mairéad Pratschke, PhD shared that she uses AI as a presence and not a tool. AI is already in place and so we need to move towards model where we can measure human + AI. The OECD - OCDE's exploratory studies were referenced that assess the capabilities of AI through standardised education tests designed for humans. Steve Watson is encouraging 'sandbox thinking' to exploring how practices might change with AI. He reassured that throughout the history of technological change, humans have always been involved in technology. Sue Attewell encourages organisations to be more agile to adapt successfully to AI advancements. Some key takeaways shared were: *️⃣ Efficiency gain is not as important as effectiveness. *️⃣ Practices that were pre-gpt were probably not optimal and AI is forcing us to refocus on basic skills and capabilities. *️⃣ Some institutions are also way ahead on AI implementations but where you will be in the future depends on where you start. *️⃣ A shift is needed from learning as a process and to investing in how AI can measured and assess learning. #ai #education #aiadvancements

No one disagreed on this point in the 2023 PwC Higher Education Leaders Survey... Maybe we are a little more on board with the idea that the methods by which education is delivered aren't going to stay the same and that change is on it's way, if not here already. Without a doubt, there are major concerns in higher education about the changing educational environment (maybe I'm an optimist), but I think the students as individuals will benefit in the long run.
