My husband and I had never participated in a Trash Bash and wanting to mentor some young leaders with East End Communities and learn from groups doing this work, we volunteered at the River Lakes, Bays 'N Bayous Trash Bash and helped clean the Kuhlman Gully in Houston, Texas. Some of the items we found: - plastic bags - plastic drinking water bottles - beer bottles - styrofoam cups, plates, bowls - condom wrappers - soda cans - food wrappers - metal shopping carts from grocery stores - spray paint aerosol cans - potato chip bags - plastic food containers - advertising signs - loteria cards - parts of styrofoam portable coolers - dirty diapers - sterno metal cans It broke my heart to see all of this trash, that will wind up in our waterways, but my heart was so happy seeing these volunteers (of all ages) come out and serve the community in this manner (even those who were differently abled came out via Uber, just wow!!) So many organizations are doing similar work in our communities and collaborating to serve together was so exhilarating! We collectively got out of our silos this morning and joined our superpowers to make a positive impact on the environment. Our goal was to join existing efforts so we can replicate these best practices in different neighborhoods in our city. Imagine what we can do synergistically to be part of the solution to reducing health disparities where we live, learn, work, worship and play? What #healthycommunities and #healthypeople we would be? Get a group of collegues together for an hour out of the office, tackle that area that needs some love 💚 #lovewhereyouwork Make some time at the weekend and involve your family. Teach your children to #lovewhereyoulive Litterpicking equipment is normally supplied by groups but if not, invest in some gear, make it a regular thing. Adopt a street perhaps. At The Bite Project we offer a free day to our people each year to use for their own thoughtful activity, e.g. cultural, creative, educational, volunteering, family time etc. We call it T-time, a.k.a “thoughtful time”. We also have an annual team T-Time where we all get together to do an activity. This year it was a team volunteering day. Doing volunteering as a team can be a great way to encourage staff to volunteer without them having to organise it off their own back - and by showing them it’s a company commitment that leadership are on board with (not just lip service). This year the team headed over to Port Melbourne to do “Cooking for a Cause” with OzHarvest. This is a great initiative as it has a range of important benefits - education, helping the environment and assisting those in need. We learnt about zero-waste cooking, sustainability…and some handy cooking skills. During our session our team was able to make use of surplus food rescued from landfill to make gourmet meals. These were then sent off to feed people in vulnerable communities. Learning that Australians throw 1 in every 5 grocery bags in the bin has definitely made me think about food waste at home more seriously. It was a nice way to get out of the office, connect with the team and feel good doing something that helps a very worthy cause. 💪 Achievements 17 sticky date puddings 69 mushroom & veg pockets 60ish people fed 10kg of food rescued from landfill Organising a team day for a cause that aligns with everyone’s values is a great way to give back - and have fun while doing it. #volunteering #teambuilding #cookingforacause #ozharvest #sustainability
