Very informative post. Lots happens fast in game play, no matter the level of competition, whether it’s practice or a casual pick up game. There may be no medical professionals around. Even non-medical people can take a few minutes to talk to the person to assess cognitive function. Do not rush to « get them up ». Encourage them to stay down, take their time. Ask questions. Are they alert and oriented. Can they feel and wiggle their fingers and toes? Neck or back pain? Ask them if they can turn their head each way on their own, Canadian C-spine rules. If they can turn their neck well, and feel able to and want to get up, ask them to roll on their own onto their side, then hands and knees and to slowly get up, mostly on their own, from that position. Your best assistance is slowing everyone down to assess the situation, no matter your training.
Athletic trainers are incredibly vital in team sports. Let’s talk about how we triage patients with head and neck injuries in the game. #lasttearpoa #lsu #basketball #athletictrainer #concussion #doctorreacts #ladytigers #brainawarenessweek
