This week is national Trustees’ Week. There are nearly one million trustees across the UK. All are volunteers who give their time for free to help thousands of charities, yet many people are unaware of what a trustee does or feel they could become one.    Here at Home-Start Oxford we have nine trustees, all with their own unique stories. They include Prue Reynolds, Home-Start’s longest serving volunteer in England; a trustee who joined in her 20s; a former early years teacher; trustees that have experienced themselves the incredible stresses of parenthood; and newest trustee, Mark Upton, who is a visually impaired dad to a cheeky toddler and a newborn baby who had previously been to Home-Start Oxford’s free stay and play groups and wanted to get involved. The role of a trustee is varied but they all play a vital part in making sure that the charity achieves its core purposes, overseeing the overall management and administration of the charity. Getting involved in key decisions, trustees share not only professional skills but their personal experience too, which can make it an extremely rewarding job and a great way of giving something back to your local community. Mark is already a trustee at Visionary UK but was drawn to Home-Start after having his first child. As Mark explains: “I love the inclusive atmosphere and approach of Home-Start. There’s no judgement to how you parent, they know that every family and child is different and their support is there for your family, whatever that looks like.” Mark hopes his personal experiences and perspective can support the work we do. He continues: “There really isn’t a one size fits all when it comes to being a trustee. If you’ve got an interest or passion for a certain topic then becoming a trustee is a great way of extending this and helping a good cause in the process. Your own experience could be just what a local charity needs. I think a lot of people feel they might not have the right skills, or they’re not the right age, or aren’t good enough but that really isn’t the case. Right now things are really tough for charities and your insights and input could really help make a difference. All you need is enthusiasm to help. I’d definitely recommend it and really urge everyone of all ages, backgrounds and skills to get involved.” We want to say a HUGE thank you to all our trustees for the work they do. 😃It’s almost here! Help us get kickstarted! ALL OF FEBRUARY we’re trying to raise AT LEAST 20k to get kick started. Feb 1st/Thursday morning at 9am (CST) you’ll see a campaign go up that will show our progress for our February Fundraising. You can give there! Big or small, every dollar counts! Here’s what we’re trying to get started with… >> Getting resources to our young adults who have aged out. Food, hygiene products, basic household needs, furniture, gas cards etc… >> Resources to foster families as needed. >> The Crown Project… access hair care/ braids/protective styles for the black community in foster care and young adults who have aged out (52% of our kids in foster care in our kick off county are African American, more needs to be done for people of color who have specific needs). Also providing things like bonnets for kids in foster care. >> Assistance with senior year things that are not covered by DCS... Like being able to get hair, nails and make up done for prom. >> Provide new shoes and clothes as needed. These are just a few things that we’re aiming to get kickstarted this year! Our ultimate goal is to have a building that’s serving as a place of help and community for kids, and young adults who are or have experienced the foster system, and the families and case workers who support them. Then we want to see this happen countrywide. We’ve got big dreams!!!! We can’t wait to see them happen!!! These look like big goals for just us. Reflecting on a Year of Community Impact – Ultra Shines 2023 As we bid farewell to 2023, Ultra Shines takes pride in reflecting on a year filled with meaningful community initiatives. Our dedication to corporate social responsibility has driven a diverse range of projects, each leaving a positive impact on various local causes. Q1: Be Brave Bottle Drive for Little Warriors In the first quarter, we spearheaded the "Be Brave Bottle Drive," rallying the community in support of Little Warriors. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to preventing and addressing child sexual abuse. The outpouring of support not only raised awareness but also generated crucial funds to aid Little Warriors in their vital mission. Q2: Spring into Action with The Mustard Seed Spring saw us partnering with Century Casinos for the "Spring into Action" campaign, supporting The Mustard Seed in their mission to combat homelessness and poverty. This collaborative effort not only raised funds but also highlighted the power of partnerships in addressing pressing community issues. Q3: Funding a New Playground with the Sinatra Aldea Foundation During the third quarter, through our affiliate non-profit organization, the Sinatra Aldea Foundation, we proudly contributed to the funding of a new playground for the Edmonton Public School Board and Forest Heights Elementary School. This initiative exemplifies our commitment to enhancing educational and recreational opportunities for local children. Q4: Spreading Holiday Cheer with the Annual Toy Drive As the holiday season approached, Ultra Shines once again engaged the community in spreading joy through our annual toy drive. Partnering with the @TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre, the initiative supported the @Spruce Grove Kinettes Christmas Hampers. The collective generosity of the community and the collaborative efforts of all involved made the season brighter for those in need. Ultra Shines remains unwavering in our commitment to making a positive impact on the communities we serve. This week, I had the opportunity to visit a community centre in one of the most deprived areas of Manchester, and a school in one of the most affluent areas of Manchester. One key discussion at both venues was the lack of funding. Schools and community centres play a vital role in our society, but they are often underfunded. This is especially true in deprived areas, where schools and community centres are often the only lifeline for children and families. The lack of funding has a number of negative consequences. For example, it can lead to: ❌ Larger class sizes ❌Fewer resources for teachers and students ❌Less provision for extracurricular activities ❌Reduced support for vulnerable children and families This can have a significant impact on the lives of children and young people. Children who attend underfunded schools are more likely to drop out of education early, and they are less likely to achieve their full potential. Community centres also play a vital role in providing support for children and families. They offer a range of services, such as after-school clubs, homework support, and parenting classes. However, many community centres are struggling to stay afloat due to a lack of funding. We need to collectively look at how we can address the issue of funding for schools and community centres. This is not just a moral issue; it is also an economic issue. Investing in children and young people now will pay off in the future. What can we do? There are a number of things that we can do to address the issue of funding for schools and community centres. These include: ✔ Increasing government funding for schools and community centres ✔Providing tax breaks for businesses that donate to schools and community centres. ✔Encouraging individuals to donate to schools and community centres Raising awareness of the importance of funding for schools and community centres By working together, we can ensure that all children have access to the resources and support they need to succeed. #education #community #funding

People often don't realize that preschoolers can face the same structural and cultural inequities as their parents. Did you know that across the country, Black boys are disenrolled from preschool programs at a rate three times higher than their peers? Or that disenrolled preschoolers are ten times more likely to grow into teenagers who drop out of high school or become incarcerated? It was with these troubling statistics in mind that we applied to the York County Community Foundation to receive their Racial Equity Grant. With these funds we're able to incorporate the evidence-based best practices which work to correct these unacceptable inequities and create a York County where even our youngest citizens can thrive.
