This is an interesting opinion piece about how #Dartmouth, and specifically its president, is handling free speech, dialogue and campus unrest during very challenging times. I don't know Dr. Beilock, but her approach reminds me of a chairman and CEO I worked for in a company going through fundamental transformational change. The ability to not only allow, encourage and enable #communication, but also to model behaviors for having those important conversations, is an important component in helping organizations navigate change or complex issues. In our case, the CEO encouraged (and expected) each of us to assume positive intent, respect each other, and to challenge the issues not the people we were disagreeing with. This kept our focus (largely) on problem solving and finding common ground. Kudos to Dartmouth, and its leader, for holding these discussions, training staff and students, and encouraging dialogue. MIT has become the first elite university to eliminate the requirement for diversity statements in the hiring process. This decision stems from concerns that such statements could lead to discrimination or bias. Instead, MIT will focus on a new policy that emphasizes assessing candidates based on their qualifications, experiences, and potential contributions to the university community. This shift reflects a broader debate in academia about the efficacy and potential drawbacks of diversity statements in hiring practices. Anyone thinking U.S. #technology, #technologists, #government, or #universities are 'falling behind' needs to see what I just saw in Dallas... That's were I hit my first national meeting of the Federal Laboratory Consortium, with the honor of presenting on how our #TechnologyManagement #MBA teams at the University of Maryland are helping strategize, commercialize & accelerate new #tech from #government inventors to #business enterprise. My co-panelists made that hour fun (thanks Vladimir, Amanda & Edward!) But what I can't stop thinking about was the rest of the time, people & experience there. SERIOUSLY... did you know we have >300 national labs & research centers across >10 #federal agencies? Or that every year, lab leaders & inventors get together in one place to share best-practices & assess impact in one common mission: getting their #research & #innovation to benefit as many Americans as possible? Or that their charter to do so is written in law? Or that always (& increasingly), they invite #market & #academic allies in #technologytransfer to learn with them & help them succeed? I mean, I knew the basics... but it's something else to see it & be in it. And only in America could the free-wheeling stories, technologies & businesses involved fill a Texas-size conference for 3 high-paced days. Finally (personal bonus): I made a side-trip to see the prairie flowers & catch up with friends at the George W. Bush Presidential Center as they prep to welcome the 6th cohort of #Veteran Leadership Program scholars ready to make their own kind of impact for #nationalsecurity. There may be plenty to improve. News that could mark a turning point in the IVY League: Massachusetts Institute of Technology has just announced that it is abandoning the #DEI's rules in its hiring policies for #faculty and #researchers. MIT justifies its position on the grounds of common sense and the simple fact that it doesn't work - quite apart from the fierce debates about #academic #freedom that it generates: the required diversity statements have been widely criticised for forcing prospective faculty members to pledge allegiance to a rigid ideology. These requirements are now increasingly seen as violating principles of academic freedom and #intellectual #diversity in higher education by mandating adherence to #progressive #orthodoxy. Ironically, MIT was in the spotlight for cancelling a 2021 lecture by Dorian Abbot, a geophysicist from University of Chicago, whose only crime was to have theorised and promoted Merit, Fairness and Equality as an alternative to the DEI holy trinity - enough to spark a hate campaign that prompted MIT to cancel his lecture on climate change.  Let's hope that the new administration at MIT will better protect academic freedom in the future!
