On point, Jennifer Mock, Adult Education programs have always been around serving adult learners returning to school for their most basic educational needs in order to obtain employment with sustainable wages. As adult learners, they come with very different challenges and needs than traditional students. It takes a different approach. Now that community colleges are seeing a decline in traditional college students, the increase of adult learners has gotten a lot of attention. Want meaningful dialog about #adultlearners, invite your #AdultEducation (College and Career Readiness) professionals to the table. Investment in #adultbasiceducation is an investment in our communities, our economy, our futures.

🔊 In honor of #FathersDay, we're amplifying Macauley O'Connell: a former student parent speaking on the needs of the nearly four million of those in college who are raising children like he did. What supports do these students rely on to maintain their #MentalHealth? How can #HigherEd leaders create more spaces for children on campus and design more accommodating class schedules for those enrolled? 🚀 EmpowerED: Lower Suspensions, Higher Success 🚀 As the Director of Social Emotional Learning for 35 schools serving over 14,000 students, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of restorative justice and SEL. That’s why I’ve launched the EmpowerED campaign, a bold initiative aimed at reducing suspensions and increasing student success. I’m also proud to announce that I’ve partnered with restorative justice expert Mashaun Ali Hendricks to spearhead this effort. Together, we’re committed to making restorative justice a cornerstone of our approach. This campaign is not just about numbers; it’s about people. It’s impacting our most opportunity-rich neighborhoods and our most underserved scholars across the Midwest. Why focus on lowering suspensions? Because when students are removed from the classroom, they lose valuable learning time, and their sense of belonging and trust in the school community is fractured. However, suspensions don’t have to be the answer to disciplinary issues. Through restorative justice, we’re shifting the focus from punishment to healing and accountability. We’re helping students understand the impact of their actions, encouraging them to make amends, and fostering a supportive environment where everyone can thrive. Coupled with SEL, which teaches essential life skills like empathy, self-regulation, and conflict resolution, we’re not just lowering suspension rates—we’re building stronger, more resilient students. I’m excited to share that we’re tracking data across all 35 schools in this campaign, and I can’t wait to reveal the results at the end of the year. 🚀 Evolution of Dual Enrollment: From Vision to Reality 📚 It's incredible to think that it wasn't until 1978 that the first institution, Jamestown Community College, launched the practice of enrolling high school students in college courses. Since then, Dual Enrollment programs have evolved beyond their initial role of accelerating advanced students. They now encompass a broader mission - preparing and fostering a postsecondary education culture among students. Courses in gifted education “Enable you as a teacher to better understand a population of kids thought of as the "trouble makers" or the students that we often say "they are fine, they are smart" -and with such understanding comes the tools to help guide them and give them what they need truly need and crave as well.” -Kindergarten Teacher endorsed in special education, general, and gifted education These courses ALSO can have great conversations about debates, perspectives, and disagreements in the field, including the work of Dr. Jim Delisle and Dr. Carol Tomlinson and Drs Heacox and Cash and others who have weighed in with contrasting views on what ‘differentiation’ can mean, its limits, and its possibilities- and different groups of gifted students who can be missed or overlooked, and what they need and how to help enable system-supports as well as self-advocacy. We need these conversations. Our students need us to have these conversations. 🌱Are you an Ohio educational organization wanting more support to grow your own #K12Talent? The Ohio Department of Higher Education recently opened the application process for a Grow Your Own Scholarship Program. Here's an excerpt from their announcement: ✅ The department will grant scholarships to qualifying individuals accepted into the program who enroll in a teacher training program. 4️⃣ In exchange for receiving scholarship funds (up to $7,500/year for four years), awardees will commit to teaching for four years in their home district within six years of graduation.  🧑🎓Leadership staff at qualifying schools are expected to proactively recruit their own students and employees to participate in this program. 🧑🏫 Each school district interested in participating in the GYO program must attest that it has difficulty recruiting and retaining qualified classroom teachers.  Ohio Department of Education and Workforce #OhioEd #GrowYourOwn #recruitment #TeacherShortage
