Lord Walton and his advocacy for "real food" touches on a significant historical aspect of food policy and public health. Lord John Walton, a distinguished British physician and politician, was known for his contributions to neurology and medical education rather than direct involvement in food policy during the 1940s. However, the sentiment expressed aligns with broader movements during that era, especially in the United Kingdom during World War II. The "Dig for Victory" campaign, launched by the British government during World War II, encouraged citizens to grow their own food in gardens and allotments. This campaign was a response to food shortages and the need for self-sufficiency during the war years. It promoted the cultivation of vegetables, fruits, and herbs in private gardens and public spaces, effectively turning lawns, parks, and even sports fields into makeshift vegetable patches. This initiative was not only about ensuring food supply but also about promoting healthy, unprocessed, and locally-sourced food, concepts that resonate with today's movements for organic and real food. The concerns about the infiltration of the food chain and the quality of food available to the public have been longstanding. Over the past several decades, there has been growing awareness and criticism regarding processed foods, the use of pesticides and additives, and the shift away from traditional farming practices. These concerns are echoed in movements advocating for organic farming, local sourcing, and whole, unprocessed foods. Lord Walton's era, although not directly linked to these modern movements, certainly laid some of the foundations for today's understanding of the importance of quality, locally-grown, and minimally processed foods in maintaining good health and environmental sustainability. The "Dig for Victory" campaign, in particular, is often looked back on as an example of effective public response to food supply challenges and as a model for grassroots involvement in food production. #ChefRamoss #veganuary

Today I am proud to announce the release of the book 'Food, Inc. 2: Inside the Quest for a Better Future for Food', with each essay offering unique insights into the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in our quest to reform the global food landscape. In my chapter, 'The Four Bites: How We Can Transcend Divisive Meat Debates and Nourish Humanity Sustainably', I delve into the nuanced and often polarizing debates surrounding meat production and consumption. My goal is to unveil the complex interplay of science, ideology, and policy shaping our dietary choices and to present a path toward a more sustainable, health-conscious, and equitable food system. This book is not just a sequel to the groundbreaking 'Food, Inc.'; it's a vital new conversation featuring contributions from some of the most influential voices in the food industry, including Michael Pollan, Eric Schlosser, and so many thought leaders I am honored to be published alongside. I encourage you to read this book, reflect on its messages, and join the conversation. Together, we can drive meaningful change and shape a future where food is a source of health, sustainability, and equity for all. https://a.co/d/2jwWjkd

✍ New blog: Now’s the time to make food fair Our Chief Executive Sue Pritchard calls on politicians to listen closely to the unprecedented consensus from citizens, farmers, environment and business leaders for action on food. "The Food Conversation reveals that citizens are willing to really listen to each other and to different perspectives, grapple with the difficult questions, to explore choices and trade-offs. They are more thoughtful, more respectful, more insightful, more generous than we are sometimes led to believe. And – to an extraordinary degree (according to pollsters More in Common) – they are less divided, and more consistent on food systems policies than almost any other policy question."
