Vision and Purpose-driven Product VP Director | Consultant | Brand Amplifier | Sustainability Champion | Agile Leader | ex-CamelBak, Klean Kanteen, Giro, Oxo
Exciting news from my home town! City of Petaluma is launching the Reusable Cup Project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at reducing single-use plastic waste. Starting this August, over 30 local restaurants, including major brands like Starbucks, Peet's Coffee, KFC, and The Habit Burger Grill, will participate by swapping single-use cups for reusable ones at no extra cost to customers. This pilot program, part of the NextGen Consortium, and led by Closed Loop Partners will run until November and aims to create sustainable return and reuse habits. With more than 60 cup return bins installed across the city, the collected cups will be washed and recirculated, paving the way for a future where reuse is the norm. Having led reusable product and sustainability initiatives at Klean Kanteen® and CamelBak, I’m so thrilled to see such ambitious and innovative steps being taken to foster sustainability at the community level. Kudos to Petaluma for leading the charge towards a more sustainable future! Changing peoples deep-rooted habits is HARD work when convenience is king... So proud! 🌍♻️ #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Petaluma #EnvironmentalImpact #ReuseRevolution #Nextgen
Today, we are excited to announce The Petaluma Reusable Cup Project, from the #NextGen Consortium, led by the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners! Beginning August 5, global brands including Starbucks, The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Peet's Coffee, Yum! Brands are joining forces with local restaurants in the City of Petaluma, CA, to swap single-use cups for to-go reusable cups to all customers at no cost, with widespread return points available across the city. This unprecedented initiative makes reusable to-go cups the default option across multiple restaurants in a U.S. city, with the opportunity to drive more customers to reuse and displace hundreds of thousands of single-use cups. We need to see much more of this. Brand owners and retailers working together to make reuse work. Beverage heavyweights The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Peet's Coffee, Yum! Brands and Starbucks are launching The Petaluma Reusable Cup Project in California. Starting next month, over 30 restaurants in Petaluma (40 miles north of San Fransisco) will replace single-use cups with reusable to-go cups. The initiative aims to encourage reuse, with multiple cup return points across the city. Led by the NextGen Consortium and Closed Loop Partners, the project will collect data on customer participation and environmental impact to assess the feasibility of scaling the model. This trial seeks to shift consumer habits towards sustainable, reusable packaging options. #packaging #reuse

This week, our friends at Perpetual: shared a behind-the-scenes Q&A on the Petaluma Reusable Cup Project with Kate Daly, Managing Director and Head of Closed Loop Partners' Center for the Circular Economy. Starting August 5, more than 30 restaurants in the City of Petaluma, CA, will swap their single-use cups for to-go reusable cups to all customers at no cost, and widespread return points will also be available across the city. Starbucks, The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Peet's Coffee, Yum! Brands and other global and local brands and restaurants are partnering in The Petaluma Reusable Cup Project from the #NextGen Consortium, led by the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners. "Our brand partners in the NextGen Consortium bring a spirit of collaboration to all our work together, knowing that collaboration and innovation are critical to scale successful recovery and reuse solutions. We know that reuse of to-go cups is challenging, and that it’s going to take experimentation to figure out how to get reuse right and ensure high return rates," says Kate Daly. Packaging sustainability is a great way to reduce the impact of consumer goods on the planet, but companies may run the risk of “greenwashing” their products. To avoid making products seem more environmentally friendly than they are, CRB's Katie Ireland and Mary Jo Werlein of Adept Packaging will discuss approaches to address sustainability effectively in packaging at this year’s Petfood Forum.
