Let’s dive into the Vegas GP where the casinos make way for the single-seaters – and examine the eye-watering $US500m roll of the dice, the drivers reactions – & the potholes. #𝟭 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽: The famous Las Vegas Strip will be locked off for the weekend causing huge access issues. Track time has been minimised. There are no support races at an F1 race for the first time ever. #𝟮 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁: The LVGP is set to become the most expensive street track ever built. F1 already invested $240m in acquiring a site in Las Vegas for the race, including pit and paddock buildings and the start/finish line. Additional spend of $20-30m were needed to construct facilities which will last all year. #𝟯 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆: Liberty Media, run by the cable king, John Malone, owns Formula 1. The company, the Formula 1 Group (F1G) is promoting and organising the event. This is VERY rare in F1. Normally, there are local promoters in each company. In this case F1G is taking on the full risk. #𝟰 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗙𝟭: The LVGP is run by CEO Renee Wilm and CCO Emily Prazer – both double-jobbing from their day-jobs in the F1 Group in London. Prazer put the original idea to the Las Vegas city fathers in 2019 – the pitch was ‘Imagine F1 cars going past the Bellagio Fountain’. #𝟱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 ‘𝗢𝗟𝗗’ 𝗩𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗚𝗣: Vegas ran a GP in 1981 and 1982 in the Caesars Palace car park. It was not a success. Indeed, legacy of those events hindered future attempts to host a race in Las Vegas. #𝟲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁: There is an F1's 'Emperor Package' available for $5m-> 5 nights at the Nobu Hotel at Caesars Palace for 12 people in a 900 sq meters room with capacity for 75 people, views of the entire city and a dinner created by a Michelin-starred chef #𝟳 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝘆𝗽𝗲: CEO, Greg Maffei said “A night race down the Strip that’s going to be iconic, that 10 o’clock view… I think few Americans will not have seen that view at some point — that’s going to be on every piece of 𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬? World Champ, Max Verstappen dismissed the 17-turn track as a “not very interesting” . Driver. Carlos Sainz was given a 10 second grid penalty for his travails! The Race takes place at 10pm Vegas time in the cold of a Saturday night. Will I be rolling the dice and watching it? YES!

It’s that time of year again for media to question the taxpayer value of the the F1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. According to the 2023 AGPC Annual Report Vic Gov’t invested $100.6m with an estimated total economic impact of $268m (EY, 2023 DJSIR Report). Looking beyond the economic impact report other benefits should also be considered: 1. Social impact - during Covid we experienced what life looked like without major events. Major events unite people, strengthen the community and instill a sense of pride for Victorians 2. Brand exposure - broadcast live in nearly every country in the world to millions of people provides significant brand exposure for Melbourne and Victoria. Add to that the exposure received via Drive to Survive. 3. Flow on tourism and economic benefit - exposure and awareness generated from above and positive experiences for the 81,000 interstate and international travellers (2023) puts Vic and Melb top of mind for future travel 4. Benefits to other Motorsports - our data shows that passion for F1 has had a direct positive impact on other Aust. Here we go again. You’ll forgive me if I call BS on this, but the perspective of the current commercial rights holder is on exploitation of an asset with little regard to the history, legacy and value of the asset beyond selling access, experiences and merch. What’s wrong with that, you say? It has a lot to do with what’s at the core of the product and that is the racing, the regs and the schedule. There are 18 months or so before a new Concorde needs to be finalized. The existing document (an iteration of previous documents) isn’t going to require extensive redrafting. They’ve said it themselves. They just want to fine tune it. So what’s the rush if everything is going swimmingly? Why not take this time to really dig in and address numerous substantive issues instead of refining an aging model? Granted many of the things that need attention fall squarely on the shoulders of the FIA and cover things FOM have no right to involve themselves in. Working together toward the goal sounds good, but it’ll take more than a few meetings. It’s time for a serious round of some Charrettes (look it up)! If you need a hint about the real agenda look no further than the linked article. This conversation in Monaco could have been about celebrating Monaco on her 81st running of this jewel in the crown event and everything she means to the sport and business of F1. Instead, much of the conversation was about the LVGP. Sorry, but that’s crass. No divide and conquer? Maybe not among the teams but venues? Watch out…

Come on, folks, Queen Susie Wolff's actually Suzanne Wolff MBE is more than just a 'wife'—she's a F1 Academy, Director, for crying out loud. And let's not forget the OGs like Maria Teresa de Filippis and Lella Lombardi—these ladies were owning the track back in the day. Now, with names like Marta Garcia and Lena Buhler tearing up the F1 Academy, it's time to recognize the brilliance of women in motorsport. They've been here all along. “If you are not getting better, you are getting worse.” My old boss said that…a lot! And there is truth in it. Everything changes Nothing stays still. Last night, I lived a good example of this. My son and I ran a 10K race for the first time since Covid. We completed the New Year’s Eve race in Barcelona. Four years ago, I helped him do his first 10K. Last night, he helped me! In my early 30’s I clocked a 10k in under 41 minutes. Last night, I finished in just over 52 minutes. 55 years old, a dodgy knee and a few kilos too many. I am definitely getting worse! But it is OK. At least I am still running. There are other areas in life where I am getting better. And others where I have to accept that I won't. Because to try and improve everything is a fool’s game. Better to focus on what truly counts for you. So what about you, kicking off this New Year? Where do you want to get better?
