Mutual Fund vs ETF Both mutual funds and ETFs are a collection of either a bunch of different stocks or a bunch of different bonds. Rather than buying the stocks and bonds individually, you can buy a mutual fund or ETF and own the stock or bond of many companies. This allows you to reduce company-specific risk. One difference between mutual funds and ETFs is that ETFs trade throughout the day like stocks and mutual funds trade once per day at the end of the day (4pm eastern time, when the stock market closes). For this reason, ETF prices are more variable. Mutual funds only trade once a day because they are only priced once a day. They are priced based on NAV, net asset value. This takes into account all of the inflows and outflows of the fund. Another difference is that ETFs usually don’t pay a distribution like a stock would a dividend. This can be more tax efficient come tax time. Mutual funds usually pay distributions quarterly or semiannually. They also make a capital gain distribution at the end of the year. This is comprised of the capital gain distributions of the underlying stocks. All of these distributions are taxable. If the mutual fund is held in a tax-deferred account, like an IRA, the distributions are not taxed right away. Tax is only due when you take money from the account.

When you buy shares of an ETF, it's like owning a small piece of everything inside the basket. ETFs are traded on stock exchanges, so you can buy or sell them throughout the day, just like stocks. They're popular because they offer diversification (spreading your money across different investments) and are usually low-cost. ETFs track specific indexes, industries, or assets, allowing investors to easily invest in a wide range of things without needing to buy each one individually

Investing 101 - Day 6/10 – ETFS – (EXCHANGE TRADED-FUNDS) John invested in the S&P 500 Index ETF, increasing diversity in his portfolio. Choosing the ETF over buying 500 individual stocks was a simpler and more cost-effective choice for John. The Big Idea: ETFs are similar to mutual funds in that ETFs offer diversification, reduced average cost, and access to variety of investments beyond what an individual investor could purchase on their own. (see Day 5 on Mutual Funds) Like mutual funds, ETFs are a collection of securities, such as stocks, bonds, and cash. Unlike mutual funds, ETFs trade on an exchange throughout the day and don't provide ownership of the underlying assets in the fund.

The simplest definition of an ETF ⬇ A stock within a stock. In fact, it's more like 500 stock within one stock. You don't need to engage in stock picking anymore, nor try to build a portfolio of 25 different stocks operating across different geographies and sectors. Just a buy an ETF. One tracking the S&P 500 is a great choice. You'll be exposed to 500 of the best American companies, most of which are tremendous international exposure. Best of all?
