“I don't know if it's legal or illegal, but I have to find a way because I cannot watch it on TV." In 2017 I wrote https://lnkd.in/epTaegE7 on the need to take a segmented approach to piracy - arguing that while there is heavy focus on the stick approach to "unashamed" pirate viewers, the bigger issue / opportunity is with the "unwilling" pirate viewers - like Daniil Medvedev. The issue / opportunity remains, and its scale and complexity is growing as content volume rises and the sector grinds through a generational shift in how content is distributed. Broadcasters, streamers and rights owners need to adopt a carrot approach to "unwilling" pirate viewers that drives up value perception through enhanced pricing models, viewer experiences and analytics. This needs to be underpinned by a reset of the content windowing and distribution models to improve accessibility and eliminate the need to use pirate services as a last resort.
