“We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future,” — Franklin D. Roosevelt In a letter from Ed Fortino & Dayle Duchossois-Fortino, along with a $500,000 donation match, they opened with this quote and emphasized that Urban Initiatives embodies this sentiment. We extend our deepest gratitude to Ed & Dayle. We are incredibly honored to have supporters who believe in nurturing the next generation of Chicagoans. 🙏❤️ #YouthEmpowerment #CommunitySupport #UrbanInitiatives

Meet Lois Greco, Vice-Chair of the #CFSJ Board. According to Lois, many philanthropic efforts fail to meet the real-time needs of communities because they provide grant funding at random without forethought and planning. CFSJ first asks the community what it needs, and then they work to find the funds to support that need. That makes all the difference. Learn more about what #philanthropy means to Lois at https://lnkd.in/gMp3U8MJ.

It is absolutely criminal that this amount of capital sits unused and held in these tax avoidance vehicles. This is capital raised off of the labor of working classes, stagnant wages, refusal to provide benefits such as health insurance, hyper-low tax rates for corporations, successful lobbying and campaign spending to destroy regulatory effectiveness, and dirty climate practices. To name a few things. Claw it all back, and let voters decide. For those unfamiliar, a Donor Adivsed Fund, or DAF, is an account that people can put assets into, and thereby avoid paying capital gains tax on those assets. If the asset is worth more than when they purchased it, they can deduct the current market value instead of the original cost. The donor can take a deduction for the year the money is moved into the fund, but is under no obligation to distribute it.
We launched our Get Off Your Assets campaign in 2019 as a call to move more money, more urgently to meet the needs of marginalized communities. If not now, when? Our partners answered the call: while other donor-advised fund providers usually have a spend-down rate of around 20% per year, Tides Foundation DAFs show an astonishing average spend-down rate of more than 70% per year. We must keep going—and as the year draws to a close, we’re asking all of philanthropy to join us. Movement leaders have told us that 2023 has been the most challenging fundraising year in the past five years. We must stand united in defense of democracy, social justice, and our climate. None of it can wait. Read the full letter from Tides Foundation Executive Director Peter Martin: https://lnkd.in/eHSukV7Y #philanthropy #nonprofit

For those looking to connect with Gen. Z, some research looks at their giving habits and attitudes, and also what nonprofits think Gen. Z wants. There are a few interesting disconnects, like: They would love a real [paper, sent through the mail] thank you note; whereas most fundraisers presume Gen. Z wouldn't want real mail. Check out more insights in Emily's story.
Although members of #GenZ are still far from their prime giving years, it’s never too soon for #fundraisers to learn how to attract their support. A new report from Blackbaud Institute offers some insights into how this generation — born from 1997 to 2005 — likes to give and corrects some common misconceptions about their philanthropic style. Emily Haynes reports. 👉 https://bit.ly/4ajKAhq #philanthropy #nonprofits
