"Even as suburban sprawl, supercommuting rates and housing unaffordability expand the footprint of places like Houston and Phoenix, the focus generally remains firmly on highways and private vehicle travel, with a few light rail lines here and there. Advocacy groups or government agencies have put forward plans to create rapid regional rail-style systems in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, DC, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area. But none have been fully constructed and implemented. For supporters of rapid regional rail, one of the biggest challenges has been explaining these projects to an American public with a siloed view of urban mass transit." #transit #transporation #sustainability

⏱ The land is just sitting there... quietly waiting. This could be the North's third most connected #rail station after Piccadilly and Leeds. The linchpin of the #NorthernPowerhouse Rail network. Not only the most logical site for the beginning of a new intercity Castlefield Bypass tunnel via Piccadilly, but also an ideal interchange. 📍 Strategically located to improve access to North Manchester, #MediaCityUK and #SalfordQuays, with connections to the #BeeNetwork rail and tram lines, the site is crying out for an interchange station. 🚄 #HS2 should absolutely be completed to Manchester, however in the mean time we have to start sorting out the bottleneck which plans via #ManchesterAirport don't adequately address. We need to remove all the fast services, not just a couple. By starting the new #NPR network here with a more incremental approach, passengers across the north would begin to feel benefits sooner, as will the economy. It's developments like this that would spur on #agglomeration and #redevelopment benefits. #ModularIncrementalism could perhaps be the way forward in these turbulent times? Interesting article although I don’t quite agree with its premise that US/Canadian cities should have built more “subways” versus “light rail.” He considers US/Canadian cities as more like Chinese cities in both being modern and spread out. I don’t think that is a comparison. Chinese cities are far more dense and I bet auto ownership per capita is far lower in China than in the US. The legitimate case that Martin makes is that the most successful post 1970 new starts—subway, light rail or otherwise have these two elements: 1. Extensive grade separation whether elevated, subway or hard street closures against rail rights of way. 2. Rail lines directly penetrate major commercial and residential centers. Dallas and LA may have the largest new light rail networks in terms of route miles but they rely too much on cheap available rights of way and not necessarily where major population centers exist. The alignments are too far away. It’s a little known fact that Calgary, which only opened in 1981 has the highest daily ridership and ridership per mile of ANY US / Canadian light rail system (yes, more than Boston or San Francisco or Philadelphia). Calgary routings directly penetrate population centers, feature significant grade separation although not exclusively and the city directs new development along the rail routes.

Innovation districts bring multiple benefits to the community but can pose challenges for transportation planners, especially with respect to parking and traffic flows. Since these districts are often located in urban areas where space is limited, and traffic congestion is a concern, designing a system to meet the needs of students, employees, residents, and visitors needs to be carefully considered. New York and London are constantly competing for the title of the world's leading city, and they both boast some of the largest transportation systems globally. Last fall, they both reached a significant milestone: witnessing four million public transit journeys each on a typical weekday, the highest since the pandemic began. This uptick in public transport usage marks a positive step towards recovery. However, it is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to the broader shifts in daily routines, work habits, and leisure activities that are impacting real estate markets worldwide. Despite many aspects of life returning to normal after the pandemic, public transportation usage remains below pre-pandemic levels. London Underground saw 84% of its usual ridership last year, while New York's subway ridership was at 70%, with San Francisco at 71% and Los Angeles at 67%. Read more:
