The Passing Away of the WWII Generation Every single day in calendar year 2023, World War II veterans’ stories and personal experiences are disappearing forever. Yielding to the inevitable process of aging and time, the men and women who served, fought and won the great conflict are now in their mid-90s or older. The youngest veteran is estimated to be 95 years young. According to US Department of Veterans Affairs statistics, 167,284 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II were alive in 2022. On July 26, 1948, Truman issued Executive Order 9981, which declared that "there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion or national origin." This decision was a pivotal step towards greater inclusion and equity within the military, paving the way for the integration of African American soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. It represented a rejection of the longstanding policy of racial segregation that had persisted in the armed forces, challenging deep-seated prejudices and systemic discrimination. Truman's order was a courageous act of moral leadership, recognizing that the principles of democracy and freedom that the military fought to uphold could not be fully realized without dismantling the barriers of racism. #BlackHistoryMonth: African Americans have served in the United States military since the nation’s founding. More than 5,000 Black Americans fought in the Revolutionary War, including the victory at Yorktown. After the Revolution, Black Americans were for the most part excluded from military service until they volunteered to serve during the War of 1812. After this war, they were again barred from service. Then, during the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation declared that they could join the United States armed forces. Over 186,000 Black Soldiers, including 94,000 former slaves from Southern states, served in the Union Army. After the Civil War, African Americans were allowed to remain in the armed forces, and gradually their opportunities expanded. For example, in 1884, African American William Hallett Greene became the first Black man to enlist in the Signal Corps, which was uncommon because before this Congress restricted Black Soldiers to infantry and cavalry regiments. Over 360,000 African Americans served in the military during World War I, more than 1.3 million served during World II, about 600,000 during the Korean War, about 300,000 during the Vietnam War, and over 100,000 during Operation Desert Shield-Desert Storm. One of the Army’s sources of strength is its ability to bring together people of different races and cultures who share common values like loyalty, duty, and self-sacrifice. Their resilience and patriotism in the face of adversity stand as a testament to the indomitable human spirit. 2. Fighting for a Double Victory: Black Americans sought to achieve a "Double Victory" - defeating the Axis powers abroad while simultaneously battling racism and injustice at home. This powerful movement united the community in a shared struggle for freedom, equality, and dignity. 3. Overcoming Segregation: Black soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines served with distinction in segregated units, enduring substandard conditions and hostility from white communities. Yet, they persevered, shattering stereotypes and proving their mettle on the battlefield. 4. Pivotal Contributions: African American service members played pivotal roles in some of the most significant battles of WWII, from the D-Day invasion to the Battle of the Bulge and the Pacific campaigns. Their valor and sacrifice were essential to the Allied victory. 5. Unrecognized Heroism: Despite their immense contributions, African American service members were denied the recognition they deserved. Not a single African American received the Medal of Honor during WWII, despite the 472 awarded to other U.S. recipients. This injustice serves as a sobering reminder of the work still needed to ensure true equality and justice for all.
