Time with our patients is inherently limited. So, since doctors typically can’t increase the quantity of time, how can we increase the quality? My answer walks into every appointment with me: Medical scribes. I conducted small tests at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and as a professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School and USIS (the Navy's Medical School) to see how much time patients FELT they got with their doctors. In exit interviews over six months, I asked patients to rate their perceived time on a scale from 5 to 60 minutes and their satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 10. But here's where it gets interesting—I compared perceptions when I wrote patient notes myself versus having a scribe in the room. The impact was profound. With a scribe present, patients believed almost double the time was spent with the doctor. This convinced me of the importance of having a scribe. It's not a luxury; it's about balancing accurate documentation and ensuring patients feel genuinely cared for and heard. Having a scribe allows me to focus on patients, make eye contact, and truly listen. It also eliminates the distraction of typing on a keyboard, leading to better accuracy and, I believe, fewer missed details. Patient experience is often overlooked, but seemingly small changes like this can improve it dramatically. The scribe is a tool that enhances the doctor-patient relationship, making healthcare more personal and ensuring every patient feels valued. #Healthcare #PatientExperience #Scribe #Doctor #Surgeon
