For a new project to be implemented in different communities, there needs to be teams developed with the awareness of all the people to be effected after the implementation, and there might be need of different approaches for an effective steps to be taken for the desired results in the planned timeframe on different communities.

I was recently interviewed by one of our funders who expressed an interest in featuring our youth-focused initiatives in Semporna. The conversation touched upon various aspects, including the specifics of our work, the challenges encountered, and recommendations for the future. During our conversation, the funder asked about the impact of their support on our project, a question commonly posed by those eager to understand the real-world change facilitated by their contributions. Considering the youth-centred nature of our work and the relatively short duration of the project (just a year old), I conveyed that measuring significant impact in terms of community empowerment might take more time. However, I emphasized our ability to discuss concrete outputs and outcomes achieved thus far. In project management, it's vital to differentiate between impact, outcome, and output, and I shared this perspective with the funder. Outputs, such as the number of training sessions conducted, and outcomes, like increased awareness among the youth, are measurable indicators of progress within a shorter timeframe. On the other hand, impact, representing sustained and broader change, often unfolds over the long term. I am pleased that the funder appreciated and agreed with my responses. This understanding ensures transparency about our achievements, clarifying the distinct contributions of outputs and outcomes while setting the stage for anticipated impact in the future.

The summer holidays are almost here. Every summer we see increases of children harmed through #extrafamilial contexts. This week we delivered a session exploring how contextual safeguarding, innovative practice, community-led initiatives, and disruption tactics can be utilised to intervene with various harms, but in particular, conflicts between groups. Two key things that came up as barriers, and actions taken away: Poor comms between communities and local organisations and agencies about live incidents, tensions rising etc. - ACTION: A communication platform is to be used by key individuals to share such live and important information on the ground. Lack of "brave leadership." Rules, regulations and professional anxieties can, at times, hamper effective communication and information sharing. Information that could trigger effective safeguarding measures. ACTION: Leaders in the room committed to be brave in their decision making processes. 🌟 Diverse Outcomes in Complex Projects🌟 In any project intervention, the focus remains on driving change - whether through immediate results (outputs) or long-term effects (outcomes). Outputs showcase how well a project works, while outcomes highlight its effectiveness. For instance, in vocational training programs, outputs include training sessions, while outcomes encompass changes in behavior, relationships, actions, systems and policies. However, in complex initiatives like good governance, advocacy, policy work, civic engagement, outcomes take on a more diverse, intricate, and unpredictable nature. This complexity stems from the involvement of various social actors, multiple conceptual pathways, and a wide array of stakeholders. In navigating this complexity, it's crucial for objectives and Theories of Change (ToC) to remain adaptable. They must be able to accommodate unanticipated outcomes and respond to them as they emerge. Flexibility and responsiveness are key in ensuring the success and sustainability of such initiatives.
