US Heartland China Association’s Post

Elite universities are often seen as meritocratic institutions that enable students to rise as far as their effort and talents will take them. Is this the case, or does the intense competition for admission reproduce privilege? If everyone had a truly equal chance to compete, would the winners deserve their admission? Should success in life depend on attending an elite college or university? Is meritocracy a remedy for inequality or a justification of it? On August 23rd, USHCA’s student-led forum will discuss these questions raised by Michael Sandel, renowned Harvard professor, in his book The Tyranny of Merit: Can We Find the Common Good? Dr. Michael Sandel teaches political philosophy at Harvard University. His books–on justice, democracy, ethics, and markets–have been translated into more than 30 languages. He has been described as “the world’s most influential living philosopher.” (New Statesman) Click here to register: https://bit.ly/3ODmjtS
