This editorial lays out exactly why I am still upset about the sudden closure of the University of the Arts. This situation still rests with the complete mismanagement of the Presidents Yager and Walk and the Board of Trustees. “Something doesn’t add up. Typically, most universities routinely prepare financial plans, budgets, forecasts, monthly financial statements, cash flow analyses and other key management reports that provide up-to-date financial information, including early warning signs of any potential problems. In fact, this level of financial discipline is especially critical at institutions that are fiscally challenged, such as UArts. University leadership should never be in a position of having to say, “like you, we are struggling to make sense of the present moment.” The fact that no one at the school can explain how and why their financial deficiencies, including an apparent $40 million funding gap, prompted an immediate closure would seem to indicate that these usual and customary financial practices were not being followed at UArts. If this turns out to be the case, it is organizationally and financially irresponsible — a managerial dereliction of duty. And it calls into question the integrity of the university’s senior management team and the quality and effectiveness of the board’s oversight.”

It was a delight to attend part 2 of the annual Victorian Commercial Teachers Association conference which brought more insights, learnings and connections. Some of the highlights on Day 2 included: - Attending Nigel Credlin's (Wealth Advisory Director at William Buck) presentation on Investing, and how to discuss and teach investment options with VCE Accounting and Business Management students. Such financial literacy and education can not only assist with real world case study understanding with mock exam based scenarios but also benefit these young minds early on, with the power of compounding, understanding these investment options and set them up financially for their future. - Meeting Joshua Jones and Jesse Spehar from Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and understanding their roles in career engagement and relationships with various stakeholders across the Accounting industry such as high schools, universities, professional accounting firms and the industry. As someone who as been through the educational system, professional services and industry, it was incredibly insightful to understand the relationships between all of the respective bodies and what I would be able to contribute to the field in the future as an educator. - Attending Noel Boys' (Teaching Fellow at the Department of Accounting at The University of Melbourne) presentation on the University's perspective on the future of Accounting. It was fascinating to hear from him and to see some of the myths regarding our industry debunked such as the rise of AI reducing employment opportunities in Accounting. In fact, the contrary is projected to be true, as per government data, which forecasts a 9.2% increase in jobs in accounting (Source: https://lnkd.in/ggbWMZKJ). It was thought-provoking to reflect on Noel's presentation and compare them with my own conversations and discussions with parents and students over the years in their subject choices for VCE and university course selections. #comview23

It is the most wonderful time of the year! One of my favorite activities of the holiday season as a professor is reading my course evaluations and student comments with a warm cup of coffee under a blanket while enjoying Christmas carols and the tree lights in the background. This year is no different! I am blessed to do the job I love and touch the lives of a few. Here are some highlights from my students this Fall: -This is one of the best classes I've ever taken. Dr. Bayram has built my knowledge of finance from the ground up, and I enjoy attending class every day! The textbook choice was good, the homework assignments were a good mix of practice and challenge, and the exams were straightforward. And the solo Bloomberg project has been an eye-opening experience! Dr. Bayram's energy, excitement, and enthusiasm shine when she teaches; I am currently a general business major but am considering leaning into finance more because of her! -Great Professor and gave great lectures, which increased my interest in the subject! One of the best teachers I have had at UST! -Professor Bayram is one of my greatest professors. She encouraged me to change my major. I think everything was perfect this semester! -Really helped me learn. Set me up for success. -I enjoyed this course. Overall, it was a challenge to learn the subject, but Dr. Bayram's lectures were thorough and helped me understand it. She does a really good job at explaining content in terms that are easy to conceptualize and relate to. I liked how applicable the material and examples she used were and how they connected to the real world. -Dr. Bayram truly cares about her students' learning and what they take from the course, which is appreciated. This was probably THE hardest class I've taken so far, but it has helped to expand my skill set and knowledge. -Very organized and clear. -Professor Bayram is truly a one-of-a-kind professor. She is so intelligent, and watching her lecture is amazing; I haven’t encountered a professor like her. Wishing everyone a joyful holiday season and a happy new year!
