The Medal of Honor: Sometimes an Honor too Far The standards to award the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award for valor in combat, are exacting — as they should be. The recommendation, review and approval processes are equally rigorous and time consuming. Each step is subject to intense scrutiny, often resulting in delays of a few years between the date of action and the award date. However, sometimes it is not the process — the bureaucracy, “red tape” — that causes inordinate delays, even denial of the Honor, but rather something more insidious: prejudice, religious or racial bias, ethnic discrimination. The 75th anniversary of President Truman's landmark executive order to desegregate the United States military is a significant moment in our nation's history. On July 26, 1948, Truman issued Executive Order 9981, which declared that "there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion or national origin." This decision was a pivotal step towards greater inclusion and equity within the military, paving the way for the integration of African American soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. It represented a rejection of the longstanding policy of racial segregation that had persisted in the armed forces, challenging deep-seated prejudices and systemic discrimination. I have identified by name and city of residence 4 members of the Massachusetts militia in the Minutemen category who were Black. The next part of my research about Black men of Revolutionary War Era Massachusetts is to compile a list of men who were part of city and town militia companies, men who were enlisted or drafted into the Continental Army regiments, and Black men who were crew on Massachusetts privateer ships . Are there any others working on identifying Black or Indigenous Americans who are Revolutionary War veterans?

#BlackHistoryMonth: African Americans have served in the United States military since the nation’s founding. More than 5,000 Black Americans fought in the Revolutionary War, including the victory at Yorktown. After the Revolution, Black Americans were for the most part excluded from military service until they volunteered to serve during the War of 1812. After this war, they were again barred from service. Then, during the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation declared that they could join the United States armed forces. Over 186,000 Black Soldiers, including 94,000 former slaves from Southern states, served in the Union Army. After the Civil War, African Americans were allowed to remain in the armed forces, and gradually their opportunities expanded. For example, in 1884, African American William Hallett Greene became the first Black man to enlist in the Signal Corps, which was uncommon because before this Congress restricted Black Soldiers to infantry and cavalry regiments. Over 360,000 African Americans served in the military during World War I, more than 1.3 million served during World II, about 600,000 during the Korean War, about 300,000 during the Vietnam War, and over 100,000 during Operation Desert Shield-Desert Storm. One of the Army’s sources of strength is its ability to bring together people of different races and cultures who share common values like loyalty, duty, and self-sacrifice.
