Whatever your view of the events in Washington, DC on Jan. 6, 2021- I think that a standard of justice should apply equally to all. Fair enough? NOTE: I DO NOT advocate violence, rioting, destruction of property or chaos. I believe that, even though governing can be a slow and messy process, it is the best way to solve problems. What happened at the US Capitol on Jan. 6th is regrettable to me. AND - if that was insurrection, then it was the dumbest, most poorly executed insurrection in US history. Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) should be charged and punished for doing the same thing that others were charged and punished for doing. Many of the Jan. 6th 'insurrectionists' were charged with 'obstructing an official proceeding' and what is described as 'insurrection.' If Rep. Bowman gets off with a wrist slap, then the others should get the exact same. First some facts. As this article explains, Rep. Bowman (who is a former school principal) pulled a fire alarm, which forced the evacuation of a House office building for over an hour on Sept. 30, 2023 which delayed a last-minute voting process before a government shutdown. THAT is 'obstructing an official proceeding' - isn't it? https://lnkd.in/gQXGPaSe Here's my point. If other people obstructed an official proceeding, then Rep. Bowman also obstructed an official proceeding. Why should the same standard not apply to him? And if others who simply walked peacefully into the US Capitol were charged and imprisoned for insurrection, why does that standard not apply to a Member of Congress, who knows the law? As a school principal, Rep. Bowman knows better than most what a fire alarm does. It is not a doorknob; it is an emergency signal to evacuate the premises. But Rep. Bowman got a little slap on the wrist, with a small fine and some probation. Why does HE get a special deal while regular citizens do not? I hope you'll read this article to inform yourself. There's seems to be a double standard here. I don't think that's a good thing, my friends.

As bills are being looked at, there is a potential change for certain hotlines such as the National Human Trafficking Hotline that may incredibly change outreach and services. Let's break down fundamentals of hotlines for survivors. As mandated reporters, we learn how to alert survivors before telling us a mandated report, what mandates and what does not. Every call is not a mandated report. Collaboration with law enforcement is amazing, but with survivors consent unless it's a mandated report (which should still be done with survivors' knowledge). Survivors of exploitation deserve to be able to be validated, safety plan, and find trust in an agency before deciding if they want to follow up with law enforcement. Let's work on better interventions, stronger community ties, more effective outreach, etc. rather than providing additional reasons for survivors to distrust us. I stand beside Polaris.
