A new law makes Florida the first state to let pregnant women receive C-sections outside of hospitals. It’s a fraught solution to improving access to maternity care in the state — and a rule change that could put women’s lives on the line. Like many other states, Florida needs to find creative solutions to the dearth of health care options for pregnant women. About 20% of Florida counties are considered a maternity desert and several other counties have low access to care. But there's a host of reasons why this approach isn't the right one. For starters, C-sections are associated with a higher risk of complications that include heavy bleeding, blood clots and infections. Yet the law doesn’t require these birthing centers to be near enough to a hospital equipped to deal with a serious problem. And this bill was pushed by a private equity physician group --given PE's track record in health care, that should give Floridians pause. Read more in my latest Bloomberg Opinion column:

In a state like Alabama, which has the third-highest maternal death rate and the sixth-highest infant death rate in the United States, some public health experts see birth centers as a potential solution to a gut-wrenching problem: Almost two-thirds of counties in Alabama have little to no local maternity care options. Next month, two labor and delivery units in the Birmingham area are set to close, including the last remaining unit in one of Alabama’s largest counties. Black mothers and infants make up a disproportionateshare of bad health outcomes.

Quality healthcare should be available to everyone, ensuing the best possible health outcomes. This week, CT Paid Leave recognizes Black Maternal Health Week. According to the Center for American Progress, Black women are 3x more likely to die than white women during pregnancy, childbirth, and up to one year postpartum due to lower quality health care, endure racial bias and mistreatment in care, and face a heightened risk of complications from underlying chronic conditions. Even more striking - 80% of pregnancy-related deaths in the US are preventable.
