A 2nd Causeway would provide Improved Connectivity and Accessibility, Traffic Relief, Emergency Evacuation Routes, and Economic Development for the region. The new highway designation by the Commission is significant as it provides increased funding opportunities (A new highway designation may make the project eligible for specific funding streams designated for highways or transportation projects. This can help secure financial support for the construction of the new bridge), provides recognition and visibility (designating a new highway can increase the visibility of the area on a regional, state, or even national level) and provides for facilitation of regional planning (A new highway designation can be part of a broader regional planning strategy, fostering collaboration among municipalities, counties, and State).

Over €16.7M for roads, cycleways and greenways in Cavan

Good opinion piece by the Grattan Institute’s Marion Terrill on how taxpayers would get better bang for buck by increasing the funding available for road maintenance, instead of of new road builds. To maximise bang for buck, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts should provide such funding under long term performance based funding agreements that link the funding to appropriate road performance metrics, indicators and benchmarks (safety, efficiency, reliability, productivity, accessibility etc). Doing so would incentivise Local Councils to plan and manage the spend in a manner that maximises road performance outcomes. The road performance metrics should be aligned with longer term strategic transport network plans. Austroads publishes good guidance material on network planning and road performance metrics
