I travel light. I never check luggage if I can avoid it. “We may have to check your bag because the flight is full” is the last thing I want to hear when boarding a plane. But I flew on an airline recently that managed to turn this negative circumstance into a positive experience. How? A typical airline pitches this as a win-lose situation. At some point, during boarding, they’ll tell you they’re running out of overhead bin space and may only take so many more bags. As you approach your turn to board, you’re anxiously thinking—did I make the cut? A smart airline re-frames the situation as a win-win. Yes, we are full. Yes, we you may not be able to take your bag on. But if you come forward and volunteer to have it checked, we will let you board ahead of everyone else. Carrots not sticks. And it costs the airline nothing! But now they not only have some people willingly checking their bags, everyone else is measurably happier too.
