U.S. Fire Administration’s Post

The U.S. Fire Administrator, Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, participated in the XPRIZE Wildfire for the Space-based Detection and Intelligence Team Summit at Swinburne University of Technology's Advanced Technologies Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Moore-Merrell highlighted the severity of the wildfire problem not only in the U.S. but around the world and emphasized the fire service needs as they respond to fires, especially in the wildland urban interface (WUI). 

U.S. Fire Administrator, Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell joined U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and New York City Fire Museum's FDNY 343 Memorial for the annual wreath laying to pay tribute to the firefighters and first responders who made the supreme sacrifice while responding on that tragic day.

A few words from U.S. Fire Administrator, Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell - "September 11, 2001, was a pivotal event for the United States, and particularly for the fire and emergency services. We honor and remember the courageous #firefighters and emergency responders who tragically lost their lives while selflessly working to save others. We also remember the firefighters who have died from the exposures they experienced in the days, weeks and years following the attacks and the survivors who carry forward their legacy. This year, and every year, we reaffirm our commitment to #neverforget." On the campus of the National Emergency Training Center, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and the U.S. Fire Administration held a joint ceremony to commemorate and honor the bravery of the firefighters and first responders who gave their lives in service to our country on this day 23 years ago.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that respirators be fit-tested to the wearer’s face to achieve a tight seal to the face. Facial hair may interfere with this tight seal. For this reason, OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard 29 CFR 1910.134(g)(1)(i)(A) currently prohibits employees from wearing respirators with tight-fitting facepieces if there is any hair growth between the skin and facepiece sealing surface. Learn about the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) project to determine how well respirators provide protection to workers with facial hair when using an under-respirator cover (beard band).
