What to do in an emergency? 🚨 Gietz employees complete the first-aid course At Gietz AG, the health and safety of employees is a top priority. For this reason, Gietz AG organized a company paramedic course for employees in collaboration with the Gossau Samaritan Association. This course provided comprehensive training on how to act correctly in emergency situations - crucial knowledge that can save lives in an emergency. 🆘 Twelve employees volunteered to take part in this life-saving course. They were trained in dealing with various emergency situations such as unconsciousness, burns or deep cuts. For example, they learned the FAST scheme for suspected strokes, how to apply a pressure bandage correctly and how to carry out CPR measures. "We have learned a lot and at the same time hope that we never have to use this knowledge." We are aware that we are not professionals, but as the quote says: "Doing nothing is wrong." 🔝 Employees are now better prepared to react correctly in an emergency and thus make an important contribution to occupational safety. Let's talk the NPRM Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued last month related to emergency response. It vastly expands in scope and detail the coverage of 29 CFR 1910.156 beyond the boundaries it has lived in for the last 40 years. VASTLY. How does it expand the scope? Well, let's start with this- if you operate a facility that has its own emergency services, you are now covered, even if those emergency services are limited to emergency medical and not firefighting. The current standard specifically stated it only applied to fire brigades. Whereas the current standard focused on PPE, with four paragraphs on training, the proposed standard's scope covers literally everything one can imagine associated with emergency response, from the Incident Command System through the living quarters for crews to mental and behavioral health services for responders who have been through traumatic or potentially traumatic events. Responders will be subject to rigorous medical evaluations and surveillance and fitness-for-duty expectations. In a word, this WILL change the way emergency response is handled and the current Preamble indicates a clear expectation that it will cover everything from volunteer fire and rescue through private fire brigades and EMS. This, at a time, when recruiting personnel to work in the local VFD is difficult, if not impossible, and NIOSH and other government-funded research organizations find that over 50% of the personnel in EMS are overweight. There are no carveouts for ADA, EEOC, or other accommodations. There are no carveouts for when a community will go without service because qualified responders cannot be recruited. 🚑 Knowledge Sharing: Stab Wound Emergency Response In an unfortunate event of witnessing a stab wound, do you know how to respond effectively? Stabbing injuries can cause profound internal and external damage and require swift action to prevent life-threatening outcomes. Here's a brief guide to help: Assessment: Ensure the scene is safe. Remember, your safety is paramount. Call for Help: If you're at the scene, call for medical assistance immediately. Control Bleeding: Apply pressure to the wound. If it's in the abdomen, help the victim lie down and press against the wound. Treat for Shock: Stay calm, reassure the victim, and keep them warm. Monitor the Casualty: Keep an eye on their consciousness level, breathing, and pulse. Stay with them until help arrives. ⚠️ WARNING: Always prioritize your safety. If the casualty becomes unconscious, ensure their airway is open and be prepared for CPR. Avoid touching visible abdominal contents. And remember, never give food or drink to the victim as it can complicate medical treatment. Knowledge saves lives. 📢 Important OSHA Compliance Memo Update! 📢 On May 2, 2024, OSHA issued a compliance memo regarding first aid treatments for musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Here are the key takeaways: 🩹 Stretching/Exercise vs. Active Release Techniques (ART): • Stretching/exercise prescribed for MSDs by an on-site first aid provider or medical professional is considered medical treatment and is recordable. • ART, a type of massage, is categorized as first aid and is not recordable. ⚠️ Extended First Aid Treatment Concerns: • OSHA warns that prolonged first aid treatment without improvement may indicate an employer's attempt to avoid recording a case. This could be a violation of OSHA’s Medical and First Aid standard, 29 CFR 1910.151. • Employers must ensure the availability of medical personnel for advice and consultation on plant health. ⏱️ Restricted Work Due to First Aid Treatment: • If first aid treatment for a work-related MSD prevents an employee from performing routine job functions or working their full shift, the case is recordable as restricted work. • Examples include needing to rest, use ice, or elevate an injured body part during work hours, leading to partial shifts. Employers should review their first aid practices and ensure compliance with these new OSHA guidelines.
