Today, May 17, is NEC (Necrotizing Enterocolitis) Awareness Day. NEC can result in very dire consequences for our neonatal population, including death. We at Keriton hope that our feeding management system contributes in some small way to preventing NEC; by assuring that not only the right parents expressed human milk goes to the right patient, but also the right recipe/caloric fortification. I would like to share more information about an amazing organization, The NEC Society, that strives to get us to a world without NEC. How to "Right" Prescriptions: Eighty to ninety percent of a patient's modifiable health factors (e.g., diabetes and stroke) are due to health-related behaviors, socioeconomic factors, and physical environment factors. Is that what we're teaching, learning, funding, or addressing? If not, why not? Well, some of us have been studying, teaching, and, yes, preaching this fact. The Levitt Center has been doing it for the last 15 years. We are joining them and are asking you to do the same. It's about time we start recognizing and treating the things that harm us all, not just those diagnosed in the office, hospital, or clinic. It's about time we write the "right" prescriptions. Give a little, gain a lot.

A groundbreaking study published in the Journal of the American College of Emergency Physicians Open demonstrates that adhering to national pediatric care guidelines in emergency departments (EDs) saves children’s lives and is cost-effective, ranging from $4 to $48 per patient. The study emphasizes past research showing that becoming highly pediatric-ready could decrease child mortality rates by up to 76%. Marianne Gausche-Hill, MD, FACEP, FAAP, co-first author and also an emergency physician at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, emphasized the importance of these results: "This study confirms what we've observed over the years—enhancing pediatric readiness not only saves lives but is also an achievable goal for every ED, regardless of their size or resources.
