Did you know that July is Disability Pride Month and there is a flag for Disability Pride Month? Here is what the color and stripes represent. The black background mourns disabled people who have died due to negligence, suicide, rebellion, illness, and eugenics. The stripe’s color represents disability types: Red: physical disabilities Gold: nuerodiversity disabilities White: nonvisible and undiagnosed disabilities Blue: emotional and psychiatric disabilities Green: sensory disabilities #disabilitypridemonth #disabilityflag #disabilityprideflag #disabilityawareness

Disabled people are often seen as “less than” their peers. The same is true in academia. Disabled scholars are often viewed as less credible and their work as less rigorous than other others. Same is true for journals and publishing outlets that focus on disability. I was even told by a supervisor that I should abandon research about disability because “it’s too narrow” and “you won’t get tenure.” Ableism is everywhere, including academia. July marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion in society. #DisabilityPrideMonth is celebrated every July to honor the history, achievements, experiences and struggles of the disability community. Today, May 17, 1954, marks a significant milestone in the fight for equal educational opportunities. Brown v. Most Disability Professionals are Ableist Emerging trends in current research suggests that prejudice and discrimination (ableism) towards disability is more prevalent among professionals who interact with people with a disability than most of us realize or want to believe. Carli Friedman Director of Research at the CQL | The Council on Quality and Leadership conducted a study to examine disability professionals’ conscious and unconscious disability attitudes. One of the key research findings was that of the disability professionals (417) who participated in the study “most scored as symbolic ableists (37.8%), with high levels of explicit and implicit ableism”.  The article titled Most Disability Professionals are Ableist is a must read for any professional and organization that interacts with people with a disability.  To view this article, click here.  https://lnkd.in/dhfJe2zw
