🤝 Partners behind the #LIFEBauhausingEurope project: meet Municipality of Varaždin! The city is the centre of Varaždin County, located in north-western Croatia along the Drava River. With 43 999 inhabitants, Varaždin is the 11th most populous city in Croatia. It is the tourist (also called ‘little Vienna’), cultural, economic, educational and sporting centre of this part of the country. The city is in the top 10 cities in Croatia in terms of the number of employees although GDP per capita in Varaždin municipality is significantly lower than the national average. The project will be implemented in the area of Beli kipi, between Drava River flow and Drava channel, 2.3 km north of Varaždin city center. In the area there are several buildings that were used in the past as storage buildings for the military and that are currently abandoned and in poor condition since the 1990s. One of these military buildings will be renovated, together with the nearby natural area as public building and space for intervention. This way, the project will convert the area into a leisure and sport facility and will help healing the dark wound of the past and focus in the brighter future. We decided to dive into the topic of the Latvian cultural canon. And we found a lot of interesting things there! But first, let's explain what it is. The Latvian Cultural Canon, or Latvijas Kultūras kanons, is a list of 108 most important phenomena that make up the country's cultural landscape. Its main part was formed in 2007–2008 by experts from different fields: art historians, specialists in folk culture, architects, musicians, and artists. Among the values of Latvian culture, one can find quite different things: a recipe for rye bread neighbors with design objects, and modern architects with architects from the past centuries.
