[PRESS RELEASE] ACI EUROPE today took stock of changes to the EU Aviation Security Regulation which introduces severe restrictions to the use of next generation (C3) cabin baggage scanners at airports in the EU and EEA. The new restriction introduces, as of 1 September 2024, a 100ml limitation for individual containers of liquids – thus erasing the main benefit for passengers from C3 scanners. It will result in significant operational strain for airports, decreasing passenger throughput at security checkpoints that will need to be mitigated with the deployment of additional staff and reconfiguration where feasible. The new restriction penalises airports that have already invested in C3 scanners to improve passenger experience, as little of the intended benefits will materialise – yet the significant purchase and operational cost of C3 scanners remain. Not sure how I feel about this. A core part of the TSA experience is the sense of urgency as TSA employees shout at you to remove your laptop from your bag. While automation can help make the average worker more efficient, I just feel that every step in this direction holds us back from opportunities to really connect as human beings.

TSA rant incoming 🚀 Why are the rules for TSA not universal at all airports? I haave TSA PreCheck so things normally go smoothly. Today the agent made me remove my iPad with a detachable keyboard before my bag went through the X-ray machine. No other time (even at this airport) have I had to do that. When I asked why and told him I’ve never had to do this before he said that’s always been the rules. Which is obviously not the case. I mean sure it’s a minor inconvenience but you’d think these rules would be universal at all airports. Which begs the question, what other rules are they changing from agent to agent and airport to airport?
