Honoured to be invited by the Singapore Business Federation to attend the 2nd Future-Ready Businesses Dialogue with Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Heng Swee Keat. The event, held at One Farrer Hotel, Singapore, focused on the theme “Singapore Economy 2030: Global. Competitive. Sustainable.” Out of around 30,000 Singapore Business Federation members, 300 C-Suite executives attended this insightful meeting. The discussions revolved around several critical areas impacting our future: 1. Globalisation: Examined the formation of regional blocs and the strategic competition between the US and China. 2. Covid-19 Impact: Highlighted the importance of resilient supply chains and effective risk management in a post-pandemic world. 3. Green Agenda: Discussed the importance of the Paris Agreement and the push towards Net Zero. Green finance is emerging as a significant growth area, with fund managers increasingly focusing on sustainability. Achieving the Platinum Green Mark and other green certifications is crucial. 4. Demographic Changes: Explored the Silver Economy and its impact, addressing both positive aspects and challenges. Highlighted the global labour shortage and the critical role of robotics in addressing this issue. 5. Artificial Intelligence: Emphasized the transformative impact of AI on various sectors. 6. Automation: Discussed how adopting robots will shape the next phase of economic development. 🔍💡 Over half in Singapore say society, technology changing too fast, and in ways that don't benefit them 😅 Or at least, according to the 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer Report, hosted on CNA a few days ago. Of the est. 1,150 participants from Singapore, more than half of individuals express apprehension that society and technology are evolving too rapidly and in ways that fail to benefit them. This sentiment reveals a growing tension between technological advancement and its impact on individuals' lives. Some feel that innovation is mismanaged in their organisation, while others feel that they are unable to catch up with technological advancement. Not helping the situation is today's post-truth era, where misinformation, false news and scams in abundance. This has caused society to view things with a more wary and cautious lense. The results are quite thought-provoking. On this note, let me share some perspective : - The world is changing, leading to an increased access to emergent technologies. - Individuals, while right to be skeptical, also should have the agency to explore new techologies independently. - Having firsthand insight into tech tools' affordances and limitations empowers us to make informed decisions, avoiding unfavorable pushes and sales pitches. - It's essential to adopt an open-minded perspective on innovative technology. A single technology may have applications across multiple domains, with benefits that may not be immediately apparent. Afterall, technology can help us, and it is up to us to decide where it can be useful. - Amidst our advocacy for innovation and technological advancement, we must never lose sight of the human element. Technology should never supersede human interaction and engagement. In the training and learning domain, where our primary "customers" are our learners, the human touch is paramount. Effective learning occurs when there's genuine human connection and interaction. To conclude, let's not fear machines replacing us. Instead, let's demonstrate why we're irreplaceable and leverage technology for self-development anf lifelong learning. At the Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore)’s Committee of Supply Debate today, I spoke about our plans to help businesses cope with near-term challenges while promoting longer-term growth. To support our enterprises to address near-term challenges and pursue transformation, we are setting aside $1.3 billion for the Enterprise Support Package, which includes the Corporate Income Tax Rebate to help enterprises with their cashflow needs, adjustments to the Enterprise Financing Scheme to facilitate access to loan financing, and an extension to the SkillsFuture Enterprise Credit to support transformation and training efforts. Beyond these, we will continue to invest in our longer-term future and grow Singapore’s economy, via a few key thrusts. First, we will enhance our investment promotion toolkit through the Refundable Investment Credit, which will help us attract and anchor quality investments in Singapore. Second, we will help our companies ride the global wave of technological advancement and pursue opportunities in new growth clusters such as advanced manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, and sustainability. Third, we will support enterprise collaborations across more industries and modalities, by enhancing the Partnerships for Capability Transformation scheme (PACT). We aim to facilitate 100 new PACT partnerships over the next five years. As our economy and enterprises grow, our workforce needs to grow together. We will introduce a new initiative, the Global Business Leaders Programme (GBLP), to strengthen our local talent pool.
