Next week marks six months for me as 826NYC's Executive Director, and one of the recurring cautions development folks shared with me when I started was about the "summer slump." If you're not familiar with non-profit fundraising, it tends to run in seasons. Winter is end-of-year giving season. Spring and fall are events seasons. And summer—at least for fundraising—is the dreaded season. But it doesn't have to be. As an educator, I know just how important summer is for our students and our work. While fundraising may fall quiet, our programs do not pause. They do not slump. In fact, they soar. This summer, 826NYC's elementary school camp provides crucial opportunities for young people to learn, create, build social emotional skills, get outside, play, and make connections with one another. 826NYC also runs a robust internship opportunity for high school students to mentor younger students, create unique writing projects, engage in daily professional development, and build their resumes. Learn more about what our interns are up to here: https://lnkd.in/gJHqgWCh And if you're able to help us beat the "summer slump" by making our fundraising match the incredible work being done each day, contribute to the 826NYC summer appeal campaign here: https://give.826nyc.org/

UX Research Intern at Lyft | I study the ways in which people create unique responses to structural barriers by seeking to understand people’s behaviors thru observing and listening to their experiences
One more day until my Lyft internship is complete! So, I want to share a few reflections. Being the first in my family to achieve several post-secondary educational milestones has often felt like a choose-your-own-adventure storybook. And, the majority of times, I have had no idea what I was doing. However, I’ve always been driven by my personal mission and values to do good. Two years ago, I began asking myself what I wanted to do after my PhD and stumbled upon UX research. With my 10+ years of research experience, I grew curious as to how I could transfer my skills into user experience and tech products. As a medical/sociocultural anthropologist, it is undeniable how tech is part of our culture and touches every part of our lives in every single way. Like the researcher that I am, I learned more about UXR and grew my UXR network (s/o to the many people that shared 30 mins of their time with me!) Fast forward to today and I can honestly say that these past twelve weeks as the only UXR Lyft intern have been transformative for my UX research experience. What once was theory, became practice. I was able to: -conduct end-to-end research -host research read-outs with stakeholders -practice multiple research methods And so much more! I complete my Lyft internship with gratitude to have collaborated with so many wonderful people doing incredible work. Many many many thanks to Sabrina Papazian, PhD, Meghan Wenzel, Anne Cormia, Rafae Aziz, Artin Yip, and so many others who have shaped my Lyftern experience. I hope my feature is helpful to other grad students in the social sciences interested in industry careers. Now to focus on finishing this dissertation! #Lyft #UXR #intern #UXRinternship #PhD

Every internship has its challenges. One of my first tasks at Elevation Pictures was to find a way to bring 50 cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon and 70 bottles of Miller High Life to the office for a party. All I had? The company card and my Jansport backpack. To minimize company costs, I walked over to the LCBO. Evelyn, a senior associate there, kindly gave me permission to use an LCBO trolley to transport the drinks to the office. The problem? The 70 bottles of Miller High Life took up the entire trolley. I’d have to make a second trip for the PBRs. This was a setback I hadn’t planned for, but every internship has its challenges. All in all, it took me 30 minutes to get all 120 beers into the office and into the fridge. Here’s what I learned: 🔹 TALK TO PEOPLE. Without Evelyn’s help, it would’ve taken me at least 10 more minutes to transport all those beers to the office. 🔹 BE READY TO IMPROVISE. Flexibility can turn a tough beer run into a manageable one. 🔹 EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE. Every beer run is an opportunity to learn and grow. Internships are full of unexpected tasks, but they teach you resourcefulness and resilience.

Last summer my girlfriend recommended I read “The Defining Decade” by Meg Jay. At the time I really didn’t feel like reading it as my “Defining Decade” is almost over. So I pushed it off and said I would get to it eventually. This summer I was out of excuses as I had no job taking up all my time so I sat down and gave it a good read. One concept from this book really stuck with me. The idea of “career equity” that argues all your career experiences should be looked at like investments. There are good and bad investments such as taking a bartending job over a paid internship position in an industry you’re passionate about. Yes the bartending job will probably pay you much more but it does not get you any closer to your dream career or just a good career. Meg argues that in this example the bartending job would be a waste of your time. I like the idea of Career Equity and that you should value your time with the mindset that every minute is an investment. And it’s important to make as many good investments as you can. That being said, we will all make bad investments from time to time and that’s ok too. I would strongly recommend The Defining Decade to anyone in their early twenties and even a Junior or senior in college. I think there is a lot of really great advice in this book and the best time to start applying it is in your early twenties.
