Rachel Auty recently shone a light on the low numbers of women working in beer in her blog post, saying, "All too often I hear a lack of workplace diversity being dismissed with a 'well, no women applied' and that’s just not good enough".
A 'passion for beer' is highly valued in this industry, but if, as the recent 'Gender Pint Gap' report by Dea Latis suggests, only 14% women are drinking beer on a regular basis (versus 50% of men) there's a discrepancy already in terms of perceived value alignment.
Passion can be cultivated and developed. What needs to happen is a serious look at what barriers exist to women both applying and being promoted as, in UK beer businesses, only 3% of brewers are female and less than 25% of managerial positions are held by women (I imagine ops and sales teams are similarly underrepresented).
Surely there's an opportunity here to help address the perception of beer as a man's drink, and boost its consumer base, by encouraging more women to work in the industry?
I, and many women I know, have/ had a really exciting, fulfilling career in beer and if the industry can sort out the gender imbalance there could be huge benefits for all.
