💡Project profile💡 part 2! Earlier this week we shared that TERC worked with Glass Futures on a research project looking at switching to low-carbon fuels. Here's more on the work during the project, and it's conclusions: As part of the project, researchers worked for several weeks at the Glass Futures test facility. We used our FTIR, syngas analysers and radiometer probe to measure the composition of the combustion gases produced and the radiant heat transfer. With that data, we analysed the differences between all of the fuels, and provided comparisons between the different parameters measured, such as gas species distribution, the characteristics of the burning process and the combustion products produced. This level of detail in the feedback helped Glass Futures to better understand whether glass-making processes would be efficient and successful with green fuels, including 100% hydrogen. Whilst our research in this project focused on a specific type of glass melting facility, the points of learning from the data we received can be generalised and used in other processes too, so the wider glass industry can drive forward their decarbonisation. At TERC, our extensive facilities for testing fuels for fuel switching include a bespoke pilot-scale furnace representative of high temperature processes in foundation manufacturing industries - our Hydrogen Combustion Furnace Test Facility - for testing of hydrogen for high temperature industries, so you can test and demonstrate hydrogen as a future fuel. A memorable and educational time at Sumitomo SHI FW as a master’s thesis worker has become to an end. I am not going to name drop every amazing coworker who helped me through the journey because they already know how grateful I am. As a result, I made the investigation about electrification and its operational and financial effects when utilized as a part of the fluidized bed process. This was super interesting and easy to work with as it is a very current topic especially along the CHP plant operators. The transition to a carbon-neutral society is necessary to limit the effects of climate change. One tool for this transition is electrification which will cause electricity consumption to increase globally in the coming years. This is covered with renewable energy sources of which rapid increase has led conventional power plants to renew their operating principles. For this reason, the power plants are now performing startups much more often than before because in some cases low electricity prices have made the power plants’ idling too expensive and led to plants’ temporary shutdowns. This will lead later to an expensive and slow startup procedure which usually consumes fossil fuels. The leading research question was “How to operate the power plant at minimum load with less fuel input when the electricity price is low?”. The chosen electrification method was to auxiliary heat the primary air flowing into the CFB boiler with heating elements utilizing the electricity when the price is low enough. The thermal power from the heater replaces part of the fuel power. It was noticed that our solution increased the operative flexibility of the power plant at very low load levels by increasing bed temperatures which would reduce the plants’ temporary shutdowns and help the part-load operation. The advantage of process electrification is that it is not limited only to idling or normal load operation, but it also benefits starting and heating up the boiler. The thesis covers also information about the saved emissions and discussion about effects of the emission trading system to the electrification investment’s profitability. Laurent Bricteux and Dr. Ward De Paepe, at the thermal engineering and combustion unit of UMONS. Finding means to fight climate change 🌍 is a major target of today's scientific research. To this aim, it is essential to limit greenhouse gas emissions, for instance by replacing fossil fuels with alternatives such as biogas or hydrogen, or with alternative turbine cycles for heat 🔥 and power ⚙️ generation. However, maintaining complete and stable combustion in such unconventional conditions can be troublesome.
