Another brilliant three days teaching, coaching and mentoring skills in self-reliance, teamwork, endurance and ultimately…confidence. It was a joy to work with @lupineadventure and the young people of St Catherines School, Bramley on their Silver and Bronze award training and practice. #skillsforlife #adventure #challenge #confidence #confidencebuilding #discovery #selfdiscovery

Interesting question from our CEO Rob Spurrier. We know that a PGA Professional can be the most powerful driver of positive outcomes across a golf business. But can the way we are taught to coach sometimes hinder the process? #golfcoaching
Does the way we learn to teach golf hinder the process of learning to play? I was speaking with a potential new partner last week and we arrived at this question. Learning to be a PGA Professional is a technical process. We learn the mechanics of the swing, the interaction between club and ball and many many other technical details of getting the ball in the hole. I’d argue that no-one has a deeper knowledge of the technical side of golf as a PGA Pro. But is that the best grounding to teach the game? Without a doubt, that technical foundation is helpful, especially when working with low handicap golfers looking to find the final pieces to their puzzle. But for everyone else, does it just muddy the waters? Our approach to learning at ORBIS GOLF is skills based coaching. We focus on the outcome and work out fun ways to help students acquire the skills necessary to complete a task. Helping students to engage with the learning process has to come before the technical detail. If you don’t have engaged students, then they won’t be coming back for the next lesson! I know the PGA qualification has come on a long way since I took it, so I’m not an expert on the most recent developments. But I do think that we PGA Professionals, as the custodians of golf’s technical knowledge, need to better understand how we can best apply that for the benefit of the student and the game. I’d love to hear your views on this. What are the most important elements of coaching for you? #golfcoach #golfcoaching #pgaprofessional

Can you really grow without asking yourself if there's anything *you* can do better? One of the most highly rated youth volleyball coaches to come into our program, Jen Schutte, does this regularly. This time it's with the help of distinguished coach and educator BJ LeRoy. Together, these two helped our coaches understand how we can be more efficient during our practice time, so that we can be better for our youth, giving them quality time and the best chance at success. These little smiles were there as part of the learning process for our coaches. How much less daunting mistakes must be for them as players when they see such good examples of great coaches embracing opportunities for improvement.

Completely out of my depth and comfort zone. What a great day of learning and development at Princes Risborough School undertaking the England Rugby Coaching Award. Takeaway message: 1. Structure of session: (activation, skill zone & game zone) 2. Breaking down coaching details of an action e.g. “1v1 tackle” (Pre, During and Post) 3. Make sure training is APES (Active, Purposeful, Enjoybale & Safe) 4. Adapt and modify your session through STEP (Space, Time/Task, Equipment & People) 5. Session link to moments of the game and your playing principles.
