As a Community Specialist (and I say specialist, because CM just doesn't cover the full scope) what you should expect as your company's FIRST Community hire 👇 Pt.1 - First things first - the JD might say Community Manager, but you will be so much more. In many cases, for first hires, you're either going to build the Community from 0 or inherit a semi-functional one. It will require more in-depth knowledge of the industry and you need to be ready for that. - You'll be the Community Manager, Strategist, Engagement, Content, Operations, Moderator and you'll have to take on the very important role of breaking misconceptions regarding what Community is and should be, and advocate for what Community really is. - If you're going to build a community from the ground up, please COMMUNICATE that it will take time, especially if that's going to be your first experience of the kind. Better do a great job, than a rushed one. If you've inherited something, it should take less time, but still it will take time to set up the right process, do an audit, review or even write the strategy. It's hard work! - You'll need to set expectations. The biggest issues arise when there are different expectations or ideas of what Community success looks like, it should always be quality over quantity, steady growth and healthy engagement (and metrics tailored to the type of community you're building). - Please remember to talk about your wins. Showcase examples of success, the little milestones, community involvement and support with other departments and the initiatives. What it feels like a Community Manager??? Being a community manager is like setting out on an exciting journey where every day offers fresh opportunities, victories, and relationships. 🌟 Although it may appear to be as simple as arranging events or monitoring online discussions, people in this position are aware that it involves much more. It all comes down to creating a dynamic, welcoming digital environment where each and every voice matters. It's about fostering involvement, fostering relationships, and fostering a sense of belonging among individuals who are varied. You wear multiple hats as a community manager: you're part cheerleader, part diplomat, and part problem solver. You serve as the link between the brand and the community, making sure that everyone feels heard and encouraged. It requires striking a balance between strategy and creativity, sensitivity and planning. Even so, there's an indisputable sense of satisfaction that comes from watching a community grow—watching its members create deep bonds, encourage one another through difficulties, and share in successes. There is an undeniable energy that comes from being at the center of something special—a community that isn't simply a collection of people but a close-knit family brought together by common interests and aspirations. Sure, there are late nights and unforeseen obstacles. Diagnose the Disconnect: Listen actively. Look beyond the silence. Are there underlying concerns? Is the content no longer relevant? Polls and surveys can be great for uncovering hidden issues. Analyze Trends. Dig into your community analytics. Are there times or formats that historically led to higher engagement? 2. Reinvigorate the Conversation: Look for Fresh Content Ideas. Shake things up with new formats like AMAs, live Q&As, or polls. Locate Member Spotlights. Showcase the amazing things your members are doing. This fosters connection and encourages participation. Member-Driven Discussions.  Pose open-ended questions or encourage members to start their own discussions. 3. Foster a Welcoming Environment: Recognize and appreciate. Actively acknowledge member contributions and celebrate milestones. Be responsive. HISTORY OF COMMUNITY MANAGER APPRECIATION DAY "Some of you might be wondering “What exactly is a community manager?” It’s actually a relatively new term. The earliest recognized origin of the role itself only dates back to the 1990s. Originally referred to as Sysops, this role began as online systems first offered features and functions that allowed for community creation. Sysops were responsible for operating the bulletin board in software systems and effectively the growth of mainstream online computer services like Prodigy and America Online. These communities took on many names but largely were identified as Special Interest Groups. Their leaders were often referred to as Community Leaders. Each Network has a purpose, and it is the Community Manager’s job to maintain focus. As online communities have developed, so has the responsibilities of the Community Manager. They are responsible for branded online communities, online research communities, corporate blogs, social media marketing, and research activities. Today the demand has expanded to an even wider variety of responsibilities and skill sets including product support and development, PR, and customer support all while maintaining open communications between the developer and the community. Community managers aren’t just about their business, they’re about developing a community around a shared appreciation for a product. They are also dedicated to assisting in improving their product, they’re the guy (or gal) that listens to the fan-base, reports back to the higher-ups and gets them to listen. Their entire goal is to connect people and build them something they all want. Community managers allow for personalization, they build relationships and empower consumers, and we think that’s pretty noble. Someone who stands up for the little guys definitely deserves a day of recognition.
