I am deeply concerned about the ongoing detention of Tigran Gambaryan, a distinguished U.S. citizen and a senior executive at Binance who has been held in Nigeria since February 2024. Despite being globally recognized for his efforts in combating financial crime, Tigran is currently facing baseless charges of money laundering and tax evasion. Tigran’s detention continues even after the charges related to tax evasion were dropped by the Nigerian authorities in June . This ordeal has not only taken a toll on Tigran’s health, as he has suffered from malaria and pneumonia during his time at Kuje Correctional Facility, but it has also left his family in distress . It is disheartening to see that despite numerous appeals from U.S. lawmakers and former federal agents to President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, no significant action has been taken to secure Tigran’s release . I urge the international community and human rights organizations to amplify their voices and pressure the Nigerian authorities to release Tigran Gambaryan immediately. He deserves to be with his family and continue his invaluable work in ensuring the integrity of the financial ecosystem.
