The establishment of a Defence Experimentation and Wargaming Hub, as a professional wargaming centre of excellence, marks a significant step change in how UK Defence is approaching wargaming as a tool for professional development, analytical research and to inform and improve decision making. Two possible catalysts for this facility are: 1. Squeezed budgets. Wargaming is and always has been a fantastically economical means of experimenting and informing decision making. It is not a substitute for hard training, nor a tool for prediction; but it is an invaluable part of the overall arsenal of professional development and decision-informing tools. 2. War in Europe. Not long before Russia invaded Ukraine, a certain senior politician was saying the days of tanks trundling across the plains were over. The calculus has changed and war in Europe is a reality. Wargaming is being used to consider the demands of the modern battlefield. Vegetius put it best when he said: ""Si vis pacem, para bellum" (If you want peace, prepare for war). In the West, our strategic focus is short-termist and internal, looking to the next election cycle. The truth is stark - war will happen, is happening; and likely not on our terms or within the timings we would like. Are we sufficiently prepared? Are we using the tools at our disposal to be better prepared? With the Defence Experimentation and Wargaming Hub, we have taken a step in the right direction. Vedette has been proud of the part we have played in the Learning Needs Analysis, Requirements Capture and establishment of this facility, and to our ongoing role in developing wargaming in Defence. This is a great try from the Ospreys from their game on NYD. It’s an attack shape of having 3 tiers that we have seen Ospreys be very successful off over the past few years. The importance of knowing your roles, timing, small chat and execution is vital to this. Even more so in these conditions. The work of Iestyn Hopkins to create that 3rd layer forces the Cardiff defence to make a decision which creates half a hole for Hopkins but it’s enough for the Ospreys to get on top. That late movement into the line is so effective and can create all sorts of problems for the defence. For this to be accurate the 3rd layer of the attack has to be scanning on where the hole is and feed that information into the 2 layer. Jac Walsh does very well to catch and pass this so quickly in the weather. It’s then followed by great hands and a great finish to produce and excellent first score in the game.
