#Intel says apprentices will learn core competencies related to technician roles, such as the basics of using hand tools with mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and vacuum systems, and a whole lot more.

** Direct On-Line Starter (DOL) ** Our apprentices come to us with different starting points, varied experience and from different company types, and that’s why it’s essential to get the basics right during theory lessons. Whilst exploring different motor control circuits during a level 3 theory unit, Paul Granfield had the candidates construct key circuits using our training boards in small groups which allowed them to explore and better contextualise their assignments having selected and wired all components.    Some candidates have previously conducted panel wiring units at level 2, or routinely conduct wiring operations in company, so this wiring exercise allows all candidates to discuss the same circuit regardless of their previous background. #apprenticeship #apprenticeshipswork #engineering #electricalengineering #maintenanceengineering #mechatronics #circuits #controlsengineering #motorcontrol #industrialengineering

Reflecting on his remarkable journey at SMD, our Electrical Design Engineer, Simon Prior, initially joined us as an apprentice on the shopfloor in 2010! His educational venture commenced with an apprenticeship, where he honed diverse skills in electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic domains, all while earning a foundation degree. Advancing to the commissioning department, he collaborated closely with seasoned professionals, ensuring meticulous adherence to design specifications. When an opportunity emerged to transition to the engineering team, Simon’s invaluable shopfloor experience enabled him to seamlessly adapt to his new role. Speaking about his experience, Simon expressed, "What truly captivates me about SMD is the mind-boggling complexity of the equipment we produce. The fact that our creations operate seamlessly underwater, managed by individuals in various locations, is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The exceptional collaborative spirit at SMD is remarkable. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠/𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫? My dad and uncle, both engineers, ignited my childhood fascination with fixing, tinkering and learning how things work. From dismantling toys to understanding bikes and engines, my curiosity grew. Initially heading to study finance at university, a last-minute decision led me to pursue a trade first. Surprisingly, I fell in love with engineering! Combining my passion for travel, I aimed for a service role, enjoying the best of both worlds. 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬/𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲? I started with a local engineering training company who focused on basic engineering training, leading to apprenticeship offers from local companies for first year students. After a practice interview, a local company hired me just 6 months into my engineering studies. Eager to learn, I seized every training opportunity, gaining electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic skills, alongside engineering qualifications. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬? I have been in engineering for 22 years, mostly as a service engineer on the road. My last 8 years of experience aligned with Fortress industries so I swiftly adapted to my role here. I started my training on the checkweighing and X-ray technologies, while broadening my knowledge of the whole product range. I have now expanded into training other service technicians, only enhancing my customer interactions and training. I am passionate about problem-solving and previous skills came in handy on a job — I was able to fix issues with a malfunctioning belt auto tracker. My expertise in belt guiding, from a previous role, allowed me to collaborate with design and resolve the problem. The success led to the customer ordering more systems. 𝐀𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤/𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬? Engineering is a rewarding profession and with a diverse skillset, you open doors to fascinating roles. Coming from a family of engineers, I am proud to see my eldest son following the legacy. Hands-on experience through apprenticeship is an excellent start to a great career path. I am currently in a dream role, traveling the world and witnessing diverse problem-solving approaches.
