I often hear “publishers aren’t strategic,” yet I am often told I am strategic. I certainly spent time in my career labelled as not strategic. It wasn’t true then just as it isn’t now. I was actually being told “you don’t fit in.” That’s ok with me. I’ve learned my differences have driven better professional outcomes and stronger relationships than if I simply tried to fit the mould. I don’t think ad ops folks are hamsters on wheels, endlessly executing with no foresight or vision. Strategy is born from experiential learning and we know our shit! Publishers know how to catch a tail wind and ride it. Most ad ops leaders I know advocated for digital and mobile investment very early on. They paid attention to signals indicating socioeconomic change and they were the people who would transform their businesses when the digital revolution knocked on the door. That’s pretty f’in strategic even if it looked like signing up for an ad server or putting programmatic tags in house priority. Publishers usually drive change from behind the scenes and often don’t get recognition for lighting the fire. Yesterday, someone very poignantly pointed out to me that a major difference between strategy and tactics is how we hedge bets. At some point we pick a path. We feel the road as we drive it and when we encounter a fork we look at our surroundings and figure out which way to go. When we pick the wrong path we turn around, get back on course and keep driving. Sometimes we pull over pound on the ground crying in a toddler sized tantrum…but largely we just find the way and keep going. Strategy is knowing where you want to go even if you don’t exactly know how you’re going to get there. I pointed out to my colleague that I look for opportunity over roadblocks when I’m choosing a path or “hedging a bet”. That was my most important paradigm shift where I look back and notice my personal label changed from tactical to strategic. Ad Ops teams have to navigate obstacles. They can see points of failure and predict them early on. Sometimes, trying to prepare for all the bumps up front unintentionally disempowers the larger goal. I’ve learned when I pick a path, things never works out exactly as I anticipate. Nothing comes easy! I’ve accepted my vision may not play out the way I expect but the outcomes come close and support an overarching theme or commitment that’s true to a higher level story branded as “vision.” I would love to break down the broader narrative that “we” are all purely tactical contributors. Generally, generalizations suck (ha ha). I don’t like this one because I don’t believe it. We are broaching another huge industry wave; maybe the biggest yet. I think we could use a confidence boost that helps us find our voices. Please share your personal epiphany that helped you grow your strategic, vision crafting mindset? SPECTACULAR move by a key indie agency.... Mediahub Worldwide US CEO Sean Corcoran joins BarkleyOKRP to lead the large indie's media and analytics practice. Mercer Island Group thoughts: - Sean's leadership adds a compelling element to an already impressive set of capabilities. - The BarkleyOKRP media stack includes everything from brand awareness to performance media (accentuated by the Adlucent acquisition), slotting very competitively next to Holdco offerings that are bigger but have their own baggage (principal buying, focus on giant accounts, etc.) - There simply aren't many indie media agencies of scale. Horizon Media of course is the largest. PMG has grown quickly. Several fine performance shops have pivoted to full media offerings (New Engen, Inc., Tinuiti, etc.). The US market needs more large full-funnel options that can change the game. BarkleyOKRP is well suited to be one of the few that can do that. - The challenger spirit he spearheaded at Mediahub will serve Mr. Corcoran well as he joins an organization committed to providing the industry a compelling indie alternative. We have had the good fortune of engaging with a several large and medium sized Publishers and Media Houses in India and the APAC region. One common trend that has emerged consistently is that most traditional Publishers, such as ones focused on News and or Print, have seen their revenues suffer. Obviously this has not happened overnight. It's a culmination of the last decade and a half of miss-steps which has resulted in the current predicament for them. But not all is lost. I still firmly believe that that Publishers have a LOT going for them. The ones with bold vision, who take control back of their audiences and their needs, and commitment to sustained tech investment will come back even stronger than ever!
