It's highly unethical to assume free use of peoples data. The only consent you can imply from peoples use of Facebook is that their connections get to see that content. There is not even an implication that you want advertisers to see it, far less AI training sets. The word "public" comes up a lot when talking about peoples Facebook (or other social media) data - but its not public. Its restricted. You had a clear expectation of its privacy within the bounds of the medium. In the same way that a bit of gossip you once shared in the pub should not be published in a full page newspaper advert by the barman. A common way of thinking I see constantly regarding data availability and its use for projects is "we captured it, therefore its ours" and the subtext of "if we ask them for explicit consent, they might say no, and its implicit in their use of the platform". AI training data is increasingly an exception in that it is seen as a guaranteed way to remove any personal identification from the underlying data - therefore GDPR is not an issue. But that's not true, and even if it was true, it's not an excuse for lack of ethical thinking or a default of "It'll be fine", especially around consent. GDPR is your legal bare minimum.
