"Slow Food commemorates International Women’s Day by highlighting women who grow food and preserve food cultures in their daily lives. According to the FAO, women produce between 60 and 80 percent of the food in most developing countries and are responsible for half of the world’s food production, yet their role as food producers and providers—and their critical contribution to household food security—is only recently being recognized. FAO studies confirm that while women are essential to small-scale agriculture, farm labor, and day-to-day family subsistence, they experience greater difficulty than men in accessing land, credit, as well as productivity-enhancing inputs and services." 💗 Support women! June 7th marks World Food Safety Day, which usually focuses on the impact of contaminated food and water on health. This year, I want us to focus on how food safety is crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and how women hold the key to food safety. Women have always played a vital role in our food systems, yet their contributions are often overlooked (a trend seen in other development goals like climate change and biodiversity). Mothers, daughters, and community leaders manage critical food-linked decisions and hygiene practices, influencing food safety from purchasing and preparation to dietary choices for vulnerable groups. Women’s role in food systems are especially pronounced in low and middle-income countries. It is all connected, empowering women is at the very center of all sustainable development goals, whether you are talking about SDG 3 for Good Health or SDG 8 for Economic Growth. However, let’s all move beyond paying lip service to women's roles and start backing it up with action and investments. At IIX, we're honored to collaborate with inclusive development partners like Sida , Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada who necessitate a gender lens at the core of their projects. Anyone who runs a business that doesn't (intentionally) bring cruelty to people, animals & planet needs to follow Vegan Women Summit. They did #WorldVeganDay proud at today's #VWSPathfinder event. I missed the latter half of the pitches (all by female founders of vegan companies) but watched a KILLER presentation by Neeru Ravi at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on how plant-based brands can reach mainstream consumers, based on 100+ behavioural science studies. Quick wins: 1) Limiting labels like "vegan" & "vegetarian" on the front of the package (consider "animal-free" and "100% #PlantBased) 2) Identifying the #AltProtein source (people will always think protein must come from animals, so they need to be shown otherwise) Depending on the occasion: 1) Highlight sensory appeal (e.g. "savoury, sizzling green beans" vs. "green beans." YES. We need to make plant food SEXY) 2) Highlight #health benefits The brands that follow all of these practices out-perform competitors. And that's how #VeganCompanies will win. #VeganMarketing #CPGMarketing

The agri-food industry continues to be heavily dominated by men, not only in number but also in influence, still leaving aside a great individual and collective intelligence that could add significant value to our society. It is very refreshing and important to see innovative women offering their solutions to complex problems from very different perspectives. Something may be changing, yes, but probably not at the speed or level of the capabilities demonstrated by these and other innovative women. Do you have a daughter? Do you worry about her future? If so, you're not alone. Many of us fear that our daughters won't have the same opportunities as our sons. This is a valid concern because, even today, the world is still learning to treat everyone the same. But consider how far we've come already. From voting rights to breaking the glass ceiling, women are making strides in every field. In fact, the seaweed industry is a shining example of women's empowerment. Women already provide more than half of production and processing labour in countries like Tanzania. They're also taking the lead in innovative ventures, like the woman-led company ALGAplus in Portugal that's pioneering sustainable land-based seaweed farming. Can you imagine what the future might hold if we continue to fight for gender equality? Picture a world where your daughter's success is determined by her skills, her drive, and her passion, not her gender. A world where she can look to role models like the women of Câr-Y-Môr, a company where women outnumber men, and know that anything is possible. My daughter is growing up watching her mum and other women do amazing things. That's an incredible gift. Seeing women in leadership roles, especially in innovative fields like seaweed farming, will give her the confidence to pursue her own passions, whatever they may be. Let's all try to make the world fairer. Start with small things. Be kind and fair to everyone. Tell your daughter she can reach for the stars. Changing the world begins in our homes but can make everyone's future brighter. Together, we can create a world where our daughters have every opportunity to thrive. A world where their gender is a footnote, not a barrier.
