Paris = Silicon Valley? Yes. Loads of fun doing the attached interview in Paris with Clarence at @Streetfilms. His films are brief, highly visual, and packed with information. Very punchy content! There's a lot to love about the city. As Audrey Hepburn said "It's always a good time for Paris." But as a Silicon Valley careerist, I feel a particular connection with Paris, and as a result, spend a large part of each year there. For a number of decades, the Valley has had an outsized impact on exciting ideas that change the world, and I wanted to be a part of it. I left Canada to build a career here. Before that, for the longest time, Paris was THE central hub on the planet for novel thinkers, "dangerous" ideas, and "think fast and break things." I'm talking about the Enlightenment, Rousseau, Voltaire, & also the early 20th century when Picasso, Hemingway, Van Gogh, Gertrude Stein, Josephine Baker, and everyone with a vision for change swapped ideas at the cafés. But in the latter 20th, Paris languished as a poop-strewn, horn-blaring, traffic-infested, dirty river mess (OK, it was never terrible!) But lately, thanks to visionary leadership from Anne Hidalgo, her deputies, David Belliard , & some predecessors like Bertrand Delanoë, Paris is again an important example to the rest of the world. As before, some of the leading thinkers, like Carlos Moreno (La ville des 15 minutes) are drawn into the city to take, and give fresh ideas. But this time, the innovations are about the role of the city itself in the daily lives of its citizens. It is this zeitgeist. This courage to scrap the endless "committee" & "pilot project" mentality, and instead to forge ahead that attracts me to Paris now. This innovator's willingness to move fast reminds me of Silicon Valley startups, & it's equally energizing. And while the Bay Area layers it on top of sunshine, ocean, & mountains, Paris layers it on top of some phenomenal architecture and heritage. But this isn't reckless like Silicon Valley. The studies have been done. The examples are available from all around the world, from Copenhagen to Delft to Montreal to Mumbai. Cities need new ways of solving mobility, & we know some of the answers, but often don't implement them because people fear change. But, bestowed with long 6-year terms, the mayor of Paris has the leeway to take a courageous stand, suffer some arrows in the back, & then let the work speak for itself. Six years later, Hidalgo was reelected, the people basically responding positively to a referendum on her work. Now in her second and final term, she has not slowed down, in fact she's leveraged Covid lockdowns & the Olympics as doorways to forge ahead. A propos of nothing, the Olympics slogan is "Citius, Altius, Fortius - Communiter" or "Faster, Higher, Stronger - Together." There's no medal for slow progress. Allons vite. Go Team Paris! 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗮𝗦 Theory and practice - what's the quickest way to get around the city? We explored this question at our HAFAS User Conference 2013 and organized our own rally through Hannover. The locations of the participants were tracked in real time and transmitted to the Hannover Congress Centrum. Public transport, stretch limousine, bicycle rickshaw, Segway, baby stroller, horse-drawn carriage, recumbent bike and many other means of transportation formed a truly multimodal field of contestants. Proposals to launch a trial to allow bikes on trams will be considered by transport leaders next week. The Manchester Metrolink currently allows folded bikes in bags on trams, but standard bikes are not permitted under current rules. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has now confirmed proposals to undertake a guided pilot to test the safe carriage of bikes and non-standard cycles on off-peak tram services. The pilot will start at the end of February and will take place over a period of four to six weeks, with results presented back to the Bee Network Committee in the summer. TfGM will shortly recruit volunteers from groups it is already working with to participate in the guided pilot. The initiative for allowing bikes on trams is a significant step towards enhancing the flexibility and inclusivity of light rail transport, supporting sustainable travel, and catering to the diverse needs of passengers.
