🚴🌳Exciting insights on urban cycling and public spaces!🏙️🌟
🔍New research from the European Cyclists’ Federation sheds light on the profound impact of bike lanes on urban landscapes and public perceptions. The findings provide compelling evidence for the importance of investing in cycling infrastructure in towns and cities worldwide.
"So if you have lots of cycling infrastructure, people will also cycle more. It might seem obvious, but for many politicians it’s not obvious yet that if you invest in cycling infrastructure, people will also cycle more, with all the benefits that this brings, in terms of public health through physical activity, in terms of congestion reduction, in terms of, of course, climate change.” says Holger Haubold, the ECF’s Director of Data
The presence of dedicated cycling infrastructure not only boosts the number of cyclists but also contributes to a more positive perception of public spaces among residents and visitors alike🏙️
By prioritizing cycling infrastructure, we can create environments that prioritize:
🏥 Health
♻️ Sustainability
🤝 Community well-being
Let’s continue to pedal forward🚴

🌍🚲 Cycling Capitals of the World: Amsterdam & Copenhagen! 🚲🌟
Amsterdam and Copenhagen have long been hailed as the best cycling cities globally, setting the gold standard for urban bike culture. 🏆🚴♂️ With a harmonious balance between cars and bicycles, these cities make cycling a breeze, promoting accessibility and sustainability.
Yet, perfection remains elusive. In Amsterdam, for instance, 6 percent of cyclists are labeled 'reckless cyclists,' disregarding rules and safety measures. While some may deem this percentage small, the reality of approximately 25,000 reckless cyclists daily poses significant risks to others.
Despite these challenges, these cities continue to lead the charge in advocating for safer, more inclusive cycling environments. 🌱💪 Let's work together to address these issues and ensure that cycling remains a joyful, safe, and sustainable mode of transportation for all. 🚴♀️✨

📈 The growing importance of cycling data is evident, as noted by CIE project manager Samuel Pierce, partner of MegaBITS, during Velo-city conference Ghent. "I was constantly reminded about the lack of cycling data available to inform better policy making for cycling. Whether it be for safer infrastructure or better services such as cycle logistics operations, it was clear that the lack of data is impeding more and better cycling."
🚴♀️ At Velo-City, MegaBITS was present during a session organized by Cycling Industries Europe on “Floating Bike Data”. This data type captures the GPS trace of cycling trips. When aggregated with the data from many other cyclists, this information can be used by policy makers to plan out better cycling infrastructure and networks within a city or region.
🤝 During this session partners from the MegaBITS project (including the project coordinators Mobycon and the implementing partner the Gemeente Enschede), Vianova I/O and Strava Metro elaborated on what Floating Bike Data is (Mobycon), how it is being collected (in the city of Enschede) and how it can not only be analysed, but how insights could be drawn from this data for better cycling infrastructure, community development and urban planning and infrastructure policy (Vianova and Strava).

Discover the staggering success behind Seville, Spain's cycling revolution:
🚲 77km of protected cycling infrastructure completed in under 2 years!
🚲 Cycling network expanded from 12km to 180km!
📈 Daily cycling trips surged from 6,000 in 2006 to over 70,000 today!
💰 0.27 million euros per km in construction cost, compared to 35.2 million euros for subways!
Other factors for Serville's success include prioritizing safety, ease and comfort for everyone. Based on Dutch, German and Danish best practice, the network’s design focuses on continuity, cohesion, directness, visibility, and comfort. Building bi-directional paths and swift construction were deliberate choices critical to the overall success.
Seville’s experience since 2006 illustrates that rapid development of a segregated cycling network can be a powerful catalyst for integrating cycling into urban mobility.
Find out how Seville's success story can inspire global cities toward sustainable urban mobility.

The transformation of Paris into a cyclist-friendly city is a testament to the power of sustainable urban planning, according to circular economist Harald Friedl.
Only 4% of journeys in the French capital are made in a private car, Friedl says, noting there are several reasons why cycling has surged.
"Paris has invested heavily in cycling infrastructure, creating over 1,000km of bike-friendly paths, including 300km of dedicated bike lanes," he says. "This extensive network has made cycling a safe and convenient option for daily commutes."
The city's mayor has also introduced "numerous policies to reduce car usage," he says, including tripling parking charges for SUVs and closing major roads to motorists.
Other reasons include the removal of city centre car-parking spaces and a "clear vision to make Paris a 100% cycling city".

Paris: How cycling out-paced driving?🚙↘️
Only 4% are car journeys 🚴♀️↗️
The transformation of Paris into a cyclist-friendly city is a testament to the power of sustainable urban planning.
4 key reasons why cycling has surpassed driving in the heart of Paris:
1️⃣ Invested in biking infrastructure:
Paris has invested heavily in cycling infrastructure, creating over 1,000 kilometers of bike-friendly paths, including 300 km of dedicated bike lanes. This extensive network has made cycling a safe and convenient option for daily commutes.
2️⃣ Political Leadership:
Mayor Anne Hidalgo's administration has implemented numerous policies to reduce car usage, such as tripling parking charges for SUVs and closing major roads to motorists.
3️⃣ Made driving less attractive:
70% of city-center car parking spaces are being removed.
4️⃣ A clear future vision:
The plan is to make Paris a “100 per cent cycling city”.
Now, during peak hours, 18.9% of trips are by bike, while only 6.6% are by car.

I have posted numerous times asking people to make a 1 day diary of everything they touch that is made of plastic or has a significant amount of plastic in its components or composition. Things such as smart devices, automobiles, TV remotes, etc. Also noting which items are used long term or headed for the bin such as plastic bags.
I even made this challenge during a WSJ sponsored sustainability event. And even though many thought this was a great idea no one would sign up for the challenge. We're too lazy to make the reality of the problem personal. Instead we look at things at the 100K meter level with theoretical solutions that the common man cannot or will not relate to.

🚴♂️ Bicycle Escalators in Trondheim, Norway 🚴♀️
Trondheim's bicycle escalators are a brilliant testament to the city’s innovative approach to urban cycling. Nestled on the slopes of the hill Brubakken, Trondheim presents a unique challenge for cyclists due to its steep inclines. In 1993, Trondheim became the world’s first city to install bicycle lifts, revolutionizing how locals navigate the hilly terrain.
These lifts have effortlessly assisted over 200,000 cyclists in conquering the 130-meter ascent, boasting an impeccable safety record with no accidents reported. This infrastructure reflects Trondheim’s commitment to promoting sustainable transportation and making cycling more accessible. It's a remarkable example of how thoughtful urban planning can profoundly impact everyday life.
🌟 Why We Love It:
✅ Innovation at its Best: The bicycle escalators are a unique and practical solution to a common urban challenge.
✅ Sustainability: Encourages the use of bicycles over cars, promoting a greener lifestyle.
✅ Safety First: With no reported accidents, the lifts are as safe as they are efficient.
