One of the things I enjoy most about aviation photography is the challenge of photographing a subject capable of great speed and finding ways to demonstrate that speed in a static image. For airplanes like this P-40 Warhawk, flown by Thom Richard, a terrific way to convey speed when low to the ground is to use a slower shutter speed, while smoothly panning with the aircraft. In this instance I used a Nikon Z9 with a Nikkor 500mm, f/5.6 PF @ 1/100 sec, f/6.3, ISO 32. The resulting photograph blurs the background nicely, while keeping the subject sharp.
