Growing up in a community of single mothers, homelessness and chronic housing instability were constants in my life. Though I wasn't a foster child myself, my mother and aunts hailed from foster backgrounds, and so instability was a regular occurrence. Fast forward to 2024, serving and uplifting unhoused youth becomes my mission. The spaces God places me are on purpose, for a purpose. 🙏🏾 Youth homelessness is a super complex issue. Shelters are overcrowded, transitional housing is few, and affordable housing - don’t get me started. According to NCSL: 👉🏾 Each year, 1.5 million children and adolescents flee home due to family conflicts, abuse, or neglect, finding themselves homeless. 👉🏾 Over 250,000 children enter foster care annually, with more than 23,000 aging out each year. These youths face heightened risks of homelessness due to various factors, including unstable placements, histories of running away, and time spent in institutional settings. At Pour Over Love, the youth we serve encounter challenges unique to Atlanta, such as the prevalence of sex trafficking and the increasing presence of gangs and initiations. We're dedicated to empowering our youth through a comprehensive approach: expanding our resources to encompass career development, on-the-job training, mentorship, and networking opportunities, we aim to facilitate successful transitions. Our goal is ambitious yet attainable: within our 12-month cohorts, we strive to secure stable housing and meaningful careers for each individual, setting the stage for sustainable lifestyles. 🤝 Will you help me in transitioning the lives of Atlanta’s at-risk youth? Weave has created a Social Trust Index score, look at downtown Jax’s! According to the organization, when it comes to building social trust, three things matter: Trusting Behavior - whether people take action to support the community Trusting Intentions - whether people feel good about the community Trusting Spaces - whether people have places to connect How do they measure? Annual surveys and census data ask if people are involved in local groups and clubs, from religious to civic to social. A neighborhood’s score includes whether people volunteer or donate to local causes, attend community events, and vote in local elections. The brighter the color, the stronger the trusting behaviors in that place. Finally, a neighborhood is rated on the number of places that allow people to engage with others, from public parks and gardens to houses of faith, barbershops and salons. From coffee shops and bars to rec centers and libraries. The brighter the color, the more trusting spaces are available in that community. Don’t wait until your confident to show up. Show up until you’re confident. We made it back in time from San Diego for our Reno Rodeo volunteer obligations! The Spanish Springs Rodeo Team volunteered at Kids Day. Reno Rodeo raises over $2 Million a year to support 14 different counties in Nevada, including our rodeo team. On our way out, Ainsley and I snuck to the back alley way and captured a few photos. She was nervous about being caught 😂, but I wanted her to get the on the ground opportunity to visualize what running at the Reno Rodeo would look like some day. Opportunities to visualize what you want is so important. If you are leading a team, parenting, or working towards your own goals…creating opportunities to visualize what that achievement looks like is so important. Change is going on all around us. There is political instability. New conflicts appear all too frequently. And of course, the weather is changing as we move into a new season. Some of the changes in our world cause us little or no concern, but for the population of immigrants and refugees in central Indiana, those changes often preclude monumental changes of location, culture, and lifestyle.   As our world is in a constant state of flux and transition, it is vital that organizations who are working with the resettled communities are able to be flexible and thoughtful so that they can innovatively meet the challenges of our current time. Here at Patchwork Indy we are continuing to look over the horizon for what could be coming. Our desire is to be an organization that is helping to shape the narrative and not only be reacting to the narrative.   Through the use of Advocacy, Awareness, and Advancement, we are hoping to empower communities and individuals to tell their stories and to make the wider population aware of the situations these resettled communities have faced and continue to face.    If you haven't yet, please consider becoming a part of the work of Patchwork Indy either through an end-of-year donation, or by volunteering, or through attending one of our art exhibitions, resource fairs, or community conversations.
