Let’s shift the current healthcare paradigm to PREVENT diseases, instead of just treating conditions that can be prevented. The US spends the most on healthcare yet our country has the worst health outcomes on most measures… crazy right? We have to change something and it starts with granting access to nutrition education to help prevent and treat obesity. Why aren’t we doing this already! It just makes sense! Take action and send this to your local congressmen and congresswomen.

We kicked off one of two upcoming programs with Froedtert Health this morning! Season's #diabetes program has proven clinical outcomes now with multiple populations (most recent data: a -1.6 point average drop in HbA1c in 6 months for folks who's starting A1c was at or over 8); with Froedtert, one of our major goals is to test deeper collaboration with providers in driving patient acquisition and engagement, coordinating care, and ultimately incorporating #nutrition as a key pillar into standard diabetes management.

A recent study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health showed that replacing red meat with healthy plant-based protein sources, such as nuts and legumes, or modest amounts of dairy foods, was associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.
Teaching patients with diabetes about healthy food and drink selections and their impact on blood sugar and overall health is imperative to managing the disease. It would be great if you could just tell your patients to eat better, control their medications and lower their A1C. But most patients can’t do it alone and your time during a traditional office visit is limited.
My Diabetes Tutor works with physicians across the country to provide virtual diabetes education and support that extends beyond the office visit. Our Comprehensive Diabetes Management Program is led by experienced and certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists who virtually provide personalized, accessible clinical coaching and medical nutrition therapy. The online program is available in multiple languages, and remote patient monitoring and insulin pump and remote device support also are available.

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine has been at the forefront of training physicians and other clinicians to prescribe #foodasmedicine to treat, often reverse, and prevent disease since its inception! Visit ACLM’s https://foodasmed.org to access free CME, nutrition research and more!
We applaud the FDA’s new deputy commissioner for human foods, Jim Jones, who last week held a roundtable with reporters to highlight all of the nutrition work in the agency’s pipeline, saying “Right now, all of the health metrics related to diet-related preventable diseases, like cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity, are going in the wrong direction – and unfortunately, some communities experience the toll of diet-related diseases at higher rates.”
Commissioner Jones added, “Poor nutrition plays a key role in chronic preventable diseases, which are leading cause of death and disability in the United States. Improving nutrition offers us one of the best public health interventions for reducing chronic illnesses and premature death and closing the disparities gap.”
We agree with Commissioner Jones! ACLM is filling the gaping void of #lifestylemedicine, including #foodasmedicune, across the medical education continuum.

The Role of Zinc in Wound Healing and Its Food Sources
Zinc is an essential trace element that plays a critical role in various biological processes. It is a component of over 300 enzymes and is involved in DNA synthesis, cell division, and protein synthesis. Its importance in wound healing has been the subject of extensive research, revealing its role in cellular repair, immune function, and tissue regeneration.
Zinc acts as a co-factor for several enzymes involved in the wound healing process. It is essential for the synthesis of collagen, a protein that provides structural integrity to tissues. Zinc also plays a role in the inflammatory response, helping to control infection and initiate the healing process. Studies have shown that zinc modulates the activity of metalloproteinases, enzymes that break down damaged tissue, thus facilitating tissue repair.

Zinc deficiency can significantly impair the body's ability to heal wounds. A lack of zinc affects cellular metabolism and can lead to delayed wound closure, increased risk of infection, and poor scar formation.

Dietary sources of zinc include animal-based foods like oysters, beef, and chicken, as well as plant-based options like pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, and whole grains.

The RDA for zinc varies by age and sex. For adult men, the RDA is 11mg per day, while for adult women, it is 8mg per day. Pregnant and lactating women require higher amounts, around 11-13mg per day.

Low levels of zinc can lead to a range of health issues, including impaired immune function, loss of appetite, and delayed wound healing. On the other hand, excessive zinc intake can lead to nausea, vomiting, and inhibition of copper absorption, which can result in neurological issues.

Zinc is a vital nutrient for wound healing, playing a multifaceted role in cellular repair, inflammation control, and tissue regeneration. Ensuring adequate zinc intake through a balanced diet can significantly improve wound healing outcomes and overall health.
